UTI? Can symptoms just go away?

Posted by glinda47 @glinda47, Nov 17, 2024

Seems I've had urinary freq, hesitation, slow stream, no sense of being fully emptied, etc. for decades. Have had cystos and nothing was seen. Doc really didn't have much to offer.

Interestingly, I've had several weird bouts over the years of extreme UTI symptoms that will hit suddenly: bladder pressure and discomfort, urgency, burning when urinate..whole 9 yards. Then after a few hours, the symptoms all but stop completely.

This happened yesterday, 1 day after a visit with a new uro. I wondered if the towlette I used before producing a sample irritated the urethra, or in my haste, I wiped the wrong way and introduced bacteria into the urethra. But I can't imagine a UTI could develop in 16 hr or so!

Wondering if anyone has had this happen where you suddenly develop symptoms, then they go away. Right now, I don't have any symptoms to speak of. I'm glad but it concerns me too. Thought I might have some form of IC but w/last cysto, doc said she didn't see any signs.

Thanks for any feedback.

I don’t know your age, but I’ve read that the female bladder can have changes due to hormone changes. This is one reason I have sought info on HRT. I use Estradiol now with hopes it will aid in preserving pelvic health. My mom suffered greatly with bladder issues…still does and I really hope to avoid it.

Of course, it could be something else. I take daily cranberry pills and haven’t had a UTI in years. Hope it continues.

A friend advised she also takes one pill an hour before or an hour after intercourse. My PCP's P.A. knows nothing about this. What is name of your med?

nitrofur mac 100mg
i got this script from my urologist,
my obgyn refused to even discuss giving me any kind of pill for some reason, i was having at least 6 or more uti per year before getting this pill. i had tried all the old wives tales out there and nothing worked, since i have been taking this pill after intercourse it has been 2 and 1/2 years since i have had one. please give it a try.

I have the exact symptoms, the first urinalysis and culture were negative. Pain was gone same night, but it was intense when it did happen.
6 days later the same thing happened. Doctor ordered another urinalysis and culture, micro was elevated for inflammation l, culture said Staphylococcus lugdunensis >1000,000 CDU/ml
But I have no symptoms.
I take a immunosuppressant Benlysta for lupus, I have fibromyalgia, and Rhumetoid Aethristis, the fibromyalgia is in a flare up.
The other two are under control.
I am allergic to penicillin and doctor said to take Nitrofurantoin Mono- Mcr 100mg for 5 days. I just hope it isn’t serious. My younger cousin died of a UTI last year at the age of 50. I am 66.

@kcharlaes Nitro is a great medication, at least it has been for me.
UTI's can occur without symptoms.
Possibly the first time when you were in pain, it was inflammation associated with your other inflammatory conditions. Not sure how they can affect the bladder.
I would talk over your anxiety about this with your doc who can explain the difference between yourself and others like your cousin you have more severe UTI's.

That med is commonly called Macrobid in my area. As an antibiotic, is it recommended to take it regularly, like every time you have sex?

It is possible to have an infection without any symptoms. But how would you know to get it checked out or seek treatment if you didn’t have any symptoms?
This reminds me of the situations when you get an antibiotic that cautions to “take as directed” and to “finish the medication” (not stop taking it even if you feel better).
Also some “old wives’ tales” are actually just common sense. This includes things like proper hygiene techniques (for bathing & showering, menstrual cycles, sexual activity, skin care, toileting). They usually can’t hurt and sometimes might help.
