Dosage Adjustments On Tymlos Pen

Posted by julieann9 @julieann9, Apr 16, 2023

I recently started using the Tymlos pen. I am on the beginning of
the second pen. I have been on the full dosage and the
side effects have been horrendous. I am 5 foot, 1 inch and
weigh 110 pounds. I asked my doc and the pharmacist at the
specialty pharmacy about starting at a lower dose. They both said
the pen only administers the full dose.
Now I am reading that people have adjusted the dose on the
Tymlos pen by using clicks. Can someone please explain to me
how to do this. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks again, windyshores. As for side effects, at 82 it's hard to tell side effects from age effects but so far, so good.

@nwyatt you can even go down to 2 clicks and move up. I could not tolerate 4 clicks but succeeded in getting to 7 by titrating. I speculated that some bone pain is from bone growing. That could also set off muscles, at least in my case. In my experience my body did get used to Tymlos but had to have a handshake first with two clicks! I also switched to morning, hydrated, and got going. My first reaction to low bp was to stay in bed but I discovered that activity raised it. We are all different but the basic message is to try to make it work for you.

When you went down to 2 clicks did you still have side effects for a few days? I started at 8 for 2 days, went to 4 for 5 days, took 2 days off completely and then started back today with 2 clicks. 5 hours later the back pain came back. It could be from the medicine or something else so I'll give it a couple days and then contact my doctor. Just wanted to know if it will take some time. The 2 days I was off of it I felt good.

I had no side effects with two clicks. I do think it is possible that a lot of osteoporosis meds cause pain because of bone growing- "growing pains" as when we were young. The drug insert mentions bone and joint pain as side effects. My experience was that most side effects eased up after a couple of weeks. Hope that is true for you.

I am sure you have seen these lists but I wanted to look them up again!

Various lists of side effects mention mild joint pain. But not muscle. The drug insert mentions contacting MD if you have bone pain or pain anywhere in your body so maybe it is unusual- but part of the warning on cancer. Hypercalcemia is a side effect and symptoms of that causes weakness, nausea, headache. I never had pain with Tymlos but had it with Evenity and now Reclast though tolerable. Hope you find an answer!

One list https://www.healthline.com/health/drugs/tymlos-side-effects#side-effects-explained

Again, if you scroll down the drug insert from Radius says to contact your doctor with bone pain or pain anywhere in your body . I believe this pertains to bone cancer only. But further down under side effects joint and bone pain are listed.

What is the most important information I should know about TYMLOS?
TYMLOS may cause serious side effects including:
• Possible bone cancer (osteosarcoma). During animal drug testing, the medicine in TYMLOS caused some rats to
develop a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. It is not known if people who take TYMLOS will have a higher chance
of getting osteosarcoma.
o Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have pain in your bones, pain in any areas of your body
that does not go away, or any new or unusual lumps or swelling under your skin that is tender to touch.

It is not recommended that people use TYMLOS for more than 2 years during their lifetime.

TYMLOS may cause serious side effects including:

• Decrease in blood pressure when you change positions. Some people may feel dizzy, have a faster heartbeat,
or feel lightheaded soon after the TYMLOS injection is given. These symptoms generally go away within a few
hours. Take your injections of TYMLOS in a place where you can sit or lie down right away if you get these
symptoms. If your symptoms get worse or do not go away, stop taking TYMLOS and call your healthcare provider.
• Increased blood calcium (hypercalcemia). TYMLOS can cause some people to have a higher blood calcium
level than normal. Your healthcare provider may check your blood calcium before you start and during your
treatment with TYMLOS. Tell your healthcare provider if you have nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy, or
muscle weakness. These may be signs there is too much calcium in your blood.
• Increased urine calcium (hypercalciuria). TYMLOS can cause some people to have higher levels of calcium in
their urine than normal. Increased calcium may also cause you to develop kidney stones (urolithiasis) in your
kidneys, bladder, or urinary tract. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get any symptoms of kidney
stones which may include pain in your lower back or lower stomach area, pain when you urinate, or blood in your
urine.
The most common side effects of TYMLOS in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis include:
• dizziness • fast heartbeat • upper stomach pain
• nausea • feeling tired (fatigue) • spinning feeling (vertigo)
• headache
The most common side effects of TYMLOS in men with osteoporosis include:
• redness at injection site • pain at injection site • nausea
• dizziness • bruising • abdominal pain
• joint pain • abdominal bloating • bone pain
• swelling at injection site • diarrhea
