Biotin and Hair & Skin health
Hello. I was wondering if by any chance anyone has been having issues with thinning and hair loss. I am 72 and I under sorry it is part of aging but I have been reading about Biotin for hair loss and skin health. As we age we start to lose nutrients that are needed for good health. Has anyone tried Biotin supplements ? And which are the good brands? Thank you.

I just started WEEM (high dose Biotin and vitamins). A medication is increasing my hair loss and I am in my 70's.
@windyshores where do you get the WEEM from?
I had excessive hair shedding after substantial, rapid weight loss. I was also diagnosed with B12 deficiency. So not sure of exact cause, even after extensive blood work. (Hopefully, it will resolve on its own, but I can’t be sure so sought help.) I discussed it with my dermatologist and she prescribed Minoxidil. I take it in pill form. I also began Vitamin B12 treatment. She says the only fda approved treatments for hair loss are Minoxidil and Finasteride. I use a shampoo with biotin that I like. I am no longer shedding excessively, but I don’t think it’s due to the shampoo,
@celia16 I have read that topical biotin, as in shampoos, is not effective but ingested oral biotin is. I have only been taking biotin in WEEM for a couple of weeks so not sure yet.
Weem is online. I got it on the most common online retailer site.
Interesting. I have an appointment next week, so I’ll ask for her input. Thanks!
A couple of years ago I started losing my hair to due extreme stress from a brain inflammation.
My hairdresser recommended Biotin in pill form and shampoo as well. Both are available in drug stores, the pills are in with the vitamins. My dermatologist was of no help, but that is his usual behavior!!!
It took at least 3 months before I saw results - first the hair loss stopped & then I noticed a small amount of regrowth. Several years later I am almost back to normal for my age. (I am elderly)
So try it, but have patience.
My hair was thinning and shedding so much! Maybe from two epidurals (steroid) in a little over three months? Gratefully I’ve always had full hair.
I mentioned Biotin to endocrinologist and he cautioned it can affect some blood work results.
My iron was very low normal. He suggested iron every other day, I take half a 18 mg pill, and 2000 mcg of Vitamin D daily. I’m also more consistent with my B12 now, being a vegan I need to be doing that anyhow.
I am no longer shedding. From the pills, from 4 months out from last epidural?
May start the minoxidil after talking to cardiologist, since it lowers the BP so much. Or I may just be grateful I’m not shedding and leave it at that.
The Minoxidil actually causes hair growth. I am due for a dosage increase soon.
I had experienced thinning hair for several years - more so post menopause -even purchased a few "topper" hairpieces to clip on to add volume and had tried PRP injections to my scalp. Last year, my naturopath suggested minoxidil in pill form 2.5 mg nightly, initially along with finasteridebut I didn't like the side-effects of the latter.
It's now been about 18 months on the minoxidil which I've cut back to every other night as the hair growth has been that phenomenal. I have full volume and rapid growth. I've started undergoing immunotherapy which I was told shouldn't have an impact on hair so keeping fingers crossed this continues.
