Hi @miketllc3, I moved your post to the Brain & Nervous System support group and the ENT support group so you can connect with others talking about neuropathic or neurogenic cough. You might be interested in this related discussion:

It sounds like your daughter has been on a long road to find answers. I hope that Mayo Clinic can help. The coughing can really take over one's life. Has she been working with a speech-language pathologist as part of her treatment?

I, also have had a cough for over 20 years with no answers why. Many doctors, many tests, many drugs and many disappointments. I was told I have asthma and now have 2 inhalers, 2 nose sprays and an allergy pill... Yet,the cough is still there. It wakes me up at night, interrupts conversation, And worries strangers when I'm in public. I'm exhausted. I have a constant runny nose (one spray helps that), sore throat, and the feel of phlegm in my throat. I'm not sure if I have ever been tested for anything neuropathic...a question at my next appointment. I also have diminished air capacity and cervical myelopathy. I will be interested in other posts.

Has your daughter ever been administered a thorough and comprehensive test for allergies? It usually involves multiple sessions with an allergist to have one allergen, or a group of them, placed on or into the skin, and then a return a couple of days later to see if any lesions or inflammation is present at those sites, or if new symptoms have developed.

If she hasn't already go see a GI doctor and have manometry done. I read a case of a man who had a persistent cough for years and found he had high pressure in his esophagus/stomach. I too have had a cough for 8 years and been told allergies, reflux, vocal cord dysfunction. I will see a GI next year.

Hi Mike
Is your daughter’s cough responsive to steroids?
My husband started having a persistent dry cough a few months ago. He was diagnosed with asthma, but had no relief from inhalers, nebulizers.
Turns out, this cough was an early indication of autoimmune encephalitis.
Last year his symptoms deteriorated rapidly, and was hospitalized and given high dose steroid IV treatment. He improved for about a month, and then his coughing started again. Within a few days he relapsed, and has been prescribed oral steroids and immune suppressants for the past 9 months. As he got near tapering off, the cough started again and AE symptoms started again a few days later.
It took quite some time to get his neurologist, and finally his pulmonologist to agree that his cough was an early indicator of his autoimmune neurological disease.
Has your daughter had any other symptoms following her cough? If she shows any signs of confusion or balance and gait issues, or double vision, discuss the possibility of AE with her neurologist.
Good luck to you and your daughter, and be vigilant about watching for other symptoms that may seem unrelated to her cough.
