@catmor been there! Still have difficulty swallowing but find it easier if a chew a bit more, then swallow with my head down. Works for me also when I have to swallow large pills and gelcaps. Here is an article I have posted on another Mayo Connect thread. Hope this helps you.

How long dit it take to get better
I have a situation now that's causing me severe anxiety like never before - unfriendly men standing around smoking "weed" in front of my apartment building! It really gets worse when I am like a half mile away from entering the complex grounds. Walking to the front door is a frightening experience for me. What I do to counteract this is to walk an hour a day. That calms me down, put things into perspective and gives me confidence. So much so that when I come back from a walk, if the men are out there I just walk confidently by. If I didn't walk I'd be nervous and clumsy. So walking works for me. But having the landlord remove these people would be the best medicine for me.
For me, being around animals is the thing that makes the most difference. If you can’t have your own animal, you could volunteer at your local shelter.
Also, there’s an App called Meandering that helps. It’s boring stories and other things that can help you take your mind off the things that are causing your anxiety.
Hope that helps.
My teen son struggles with anxiety and OCD. Deep breathing (in through nose/out through mouth slowly), sound machines/calm music, aroma therapy, guided meditation/thinking focusing on all senses (seeing, hearing, touch, taste, etc.), taking magnesium/Calm and melatonin supplements for sleep/relaxation, warm epsom salt baths/showers, massage, etc. can help those suffering with anxiety. I also think it is important to get enough sleep and exercise plus minimize stressful situations and people as much as possible to reduce anxiety triggers.
My tendency is to find a worse case scenario and dwell on it, build it up so I'm not focusing on all that is right! If I have enough money for a year, I'm only worried about what will happen in a year instead of being grateful for the now. Since having a stroke (6 years ago) my brain always focuses on the fear. What if I can't walk replaces the fact that I'm walking fine now. It goes on and on. I forget to be grateful.
Hi @catmor, as you can see from the many replies you've received from members, you are not alone. @bostonbonnie mentions fear of the future builds anxiety. She's right. When you feel that surge of anxiety coming and you can't swallow, it can help to refocus your mind on the present. This exercise may seem overly simple, but try this:
Name 5 things you can see
5 things you can hear
5 things you can touch
