Anyone tried Gabapentin for Fibromyalgia?

Posted by ripley @ripley, Oct 18, 2023

I've had fibromyalgia for almost two years. Each flare seems to get progressively worse. I'm trying to figure out what medication to try with the least amount of side effects and withdrawal issues. Has anyone tried Gabapentin? If so, what was your experience?

I tired Gabapentine for fibromylgia and had a very bad reaction, 11 years ago with swelling, itching and skin rashes. My GP recommended Pregablin and my body is fine with it, it reduces the intensity of the pins and needles and slightly reduces my neurophatic pain from my hernited discs.

What is your dose of Pregablin? Sounds like you don't have any side effects? Thanks.

Hi,
My dosage is 2, 25mg 4 times a day.
I also have dry cupping which reduces the pain, relaxes the muscles and enables me to get an undisturbed night sleep, I have hydro therapy where I strengthen my muscles and keeping my joints mobile, I practice yoga, do gentle stretches and strengthening exercises at home, and go walking. I use breathing exercises and mediation when my symptoms are really bad. Also, use other holistic methods to maintain and manage, my symptoms as I also have neurophatic pain and sciaticia from hernited lumbar, cervical and sacrum discs. Nutrition is also important so I eat alkline and whole foods.

I have also had adaptions made to my home which makes it more comfortable to live and stay at home, and use a walking aid. I contacted occupational health and all the equipment is free in England, UK. ( I don't know if you live here on in another country). The four hydro therapy was free under the National Health Service (NHS), now I pay £5.50 per session, and I am waiting to have acupuncture again, which reduces my pain and symptoms, and is free under the NHS.

I use an intergrated approach to my care as I work freelance in the cultrual sector which is very stressful and unapologetic, and I enjoy my independence and working enables me that freedom. Finally, I speak to a counsellor, which I pay for, ( as the waiting list is ridiculous and you only get 6 free sessions with the NHS), as I know how stressful and depressing the symptoms can get and overwhelm me. Hope this all helps, and you find a solution to help you manage your condition.

Best wishes,
D

Gabapentin caused water retention- especially in my legs- even lowering the dose.

Unfortunately, does not work for me. 6 hrs after one dose, thighs gained 1/2 inch in circumference, face became red and swollen.

I took Gabapentin and I thought my head would explode. Other people told me it made them forgetful. If you could find another drug it would be better than Gabapentin. Start searching for supplements that work for fibro also keep moving. Gentle movements while you are hurting. I found those are the best solutions. I’ve been diagnosed since 1992. Tried many things. You can also learn to block pain with your mind when you are awake. Unfortunately it doesn’t help at night time. Having moved to a warm climate has helped tremendously. I always hurt more when it was cold. I’m not sure what supplements are used right now as my fibro has been so much better the last 10 years.

So, the 300mg dose 3x a day did help with pain relief? It sounds like doses lower than that did not help? Did it help you sleep at all, because I struggle with that as well as pain? Did you have any other side effects other than weight gain and water retention? Thank you.

It does help me sleep at night. I have fibromyalgia and also involuntary movements. I have increased my dosage again because with the colder weather I am in considerably more pain.

My fibromyalgia, causes me to have muscle cramps mainly in my pectoral muscles, that mimic
heart issues. I also have what feel like tiny pin pricks any any time on my upper torso. I take 75mg
of Lyrica twice a day once when I go to bed and once when I get up. I tried Gabapentin, and once day I was playing golf and made me nauseous and a terrible headache. I know each of us react to all drugs generally different.

My Dr suggests I start with 25mg twice a day, on an "as needed basis". Did you start Lyrica at a low dose and work up to 75mg/2xday? If so, did a lower dose help you for a while before you had to increase? Any side effects, such as sleepiness? Thank you.

How much Gabapentin do you take for sleep? Does it help you fall back asleep, which is my issue. My Dr prescribed 100mg, which I haven't started yet. I'm wondering if that's enough to make a difference.

I have not heard Gabapentin used for sleep. I gave me nightmares and waking up all the time, but I was trying it for pain. I switched to Lycra, working up to 1.5m twice a day and it has helped fairly well but not completely. However I will not go any higher due to the way it makes me feel.
