Effect of Statins on PMR pain
I was extremely hesitant to take cholesterol meds having heard that they can cause joint and muscle pain. I’ve had PMR for 2 years and certainly didn’t want to add another pain factor.
My dr convinced me that with a new drug that doesn’t have statins and a very low dosage of a drug that does we could lower my cholesterol without causing muscle pain.
Two days on this combination and my PMR pain jumped from a 4 or 5 to an 8 or 9.
No thanks!

I have issues with cholesterol. My total numbers run 300+. They increased taking prednisone. I have a lot of issues with statins. I have tried every version that ends in "tin". Dr even told me I had crohns disease. Turns out it was the statins. Mayo clinic put me on Repatha. Its an epi pen you give twice a month. I have not noticed any side effects. I was taking both prednisone and repatha at the same time. My numbers were better off the prednisone. You should try to get off the steroids. My total cholesterol is now around 120.

Wow! 120 is amazing! Great news for you! Well done!
I haven’t been under 200 in over 25 years.
I’ve been trying to taper off prednisone and am down to 7.5 mg but since my cholesterol has been around 220 for decades before prednisone, I guess that’s not the answer for me.
Yes. I told him I stopped the cholesterol meds. Have an appt this morning.
My cholesterol has been high forever. I have the genetic version. I always thought I would just live with 220-250. I watched my diet. went on keto for awhile nothing really changed it. Got PMR at 68. Went on steroids. The prednisone caused my cholesterol to go to 300. The rhumy sent me for an ultrasound of my carotid. I was 100% blocked in the right and 70% in the left. I had to have the left side cleaned out. My point is that its not necessarily a good idea to just live with it.
Thanks for the warning.
I went to a naturopath who said that because of some other result on my blood test results (not LDL or HDL…try something) there’s no need for me to be on cholesterol meds. Hopefully she’s right. 😱
