Has anyone heard of Wellen Exercise for Osteoporosis & osteopenia?

Has anyone heard of Wellen? It's an exercise program for osteoporosis and osteopenia. I'm not sure what they do because there is no video to show an example.

My PT emphatically did NOT recommend Dr. Fishman’s yoga poses, and she is a specialist in spinal health. My functional OB/GYN did NOT encourage me to buy a weighted vest. I have been a Wellen user for the better part of a year, and find it sometimes a bit boring/repetitive, but reasonably priced, and eminently doable and helpful. I used it as part of a successful regimen to turn around my osteoporosis diagnosis.

@alphabet Yes Dr. Lani Simpson also nixed the weighted vest. I also tried Wellen and thought the same thing - kinda boring. So, what do your docs say about lifting weights in general? I've heard everything between not lifting more than 5 lbs. to lifting heavier weights with low repetitions.

From what I have read or heard on-line, it seems lighter weights with more reps seems to be the safer route. With chronic shoulder issues, no heavy weights for me, anyway. Keeping the weights under 5 lbs. seems to be working for me, so if it ain’t broke….!
Boring is another matter. I try to spice up the Wellen exercises where I can, maybe adding a light weight here and there. Wellen has just been integrated into Osteoboost, so maybe there will be additional changes in their program.
Silver Sneakers helps round out my exercise week. I am considering looking into other formats, just to keep my mojo going! 💪

I respectfully disagree with the negative comments on weighted vests. It has saved my osteoporosis. I go 2 miles a day with a 20 pound vest and my bone density has vastly improved. I have no idea why anyone would ban it unless there were balance or other issues. It has vastly improved my balance and my posture. That and weight training have been a miracle.

After six months using the best, I now Row three times a week, weight train three times a week, and hike with him without Best 2 to 4 miles a week. Chemo induced osteoporosis was getting really really bad. But I’m getting really really strong!

I thought it was just me. Wellen is boring. It gets the job done, but doesn’t make exercise fun.
I’m using Bold free with my insurance. But, the Best is Peleton.
Many different exercise instructors with personality which makes my exercise more entertaining.

@thaispalmer That's great! Not sure the reason for Dr. Lani not recommending it....

@vgen I have done Peleton and their classes are really good. I have not done the bike bc from what I hear Spinning is not recommended for people with osteoporosis. I'm not familiar with Bold but I'm going to look it up. THx for the info!

I gave up my moderate road cycling practice when I was diagnosed with osteopenia to focus more on weight bearing exercise, including lots of hiking. 7 years later I've crossed into osteoporosis. The other day I rode a bit while on vacation and was shocked at how winded I was. I'm planning on including more cycling in my exercise mix to keep up on cardiovascular health. Cycling isn't great for bones but does a great job with that. Just got a great Black Friday deal on an indoor exercise bike.

Interesting information about the vest, i read somewhere ( who know where ) but a weight belt is safer than the vest for those of us with spine problems.

It’s so great your bone density has improved with all you are doing!!! I do weight twice a week, a third day would be so beneficial but that is not happening 😊

@sonodeka Good for you! Yes, weights are important! I do them but not as much as I should. Cardio is important too. I do 30 minute cadio on You Tube. Another one I follow on You Tube is Fitness with PJ. She is in her 50's and her workouts are superb! She has weights, cardio, cardio kickboxing and more. I've been doing her stuff for about 3 years now. Experts say that leg strength is important too. Squats and Lunges - you can never go wrong with them.

@willow5 - Yes 3x a week is better but I myself probably end up doing it twice also. It's better than doing nothing!
