neuropathy in feet

Posted by elawrie46 @elawrie46, Nov 15 1:29pm

I have nerve damage in my feet. Does anyone have this problem? When I start to walk my feet make me go forward at a quick momentum, almost like running and not able to stop. Has anyone heard of this problem?

Called festination this gait disturbance can be helped with physical therapy. If your steps quicken as a balance protection caused by leaning forward, you might try physical.
It can result from certain medications. If the cause is Parkinsons relief might be found in deep brain stimulation.
If you haven't seen a doctor to rule out parkinsons you might.
One of the physicians I used to see had this gait disturbance usually resulting in a freeze where he could't move. His cause was Parkinson's and he continued to work pausing frequently.

Do you have any odd sensation?

This seems to be more than just the feet. I have small fiber neuropathy in my feet and spine issues/neurogenic claudication. Your feet may have sensory disturbances and deficits which could cause balance issues but the mixed signals making you walk faster seems tied to central nervous system and peripheral nervous system combined. You may want to get EMGs of your lower limbs and MRI of your brain/lumbar spine to see if there is more behind your gait change.

P.S. You may also need to look at your cervical spine if your spinal cord is compressed and causing gait changes below the level in your neck. I have this and my spinal cord is damaged and communications from brain to body and body to brain are impacted.

No I don't. My feet have numbness in them, but nothing other than that.
