Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tjanet @tjanet, Nov 13 1:03pm

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

From what I read about Ultima powder is that there's no sugar in it. My body needs sugar for it to absorb in my body.

I was drinking regular gatorade but it didn't help much. It seems that coconut water is helping me more than gatorade.

Tjanet:
As I aged I found my body didn't absorb electrolytes the same as it did when I was younger, so I was getting muscle spasms (Charlie Horses) in my calves and shoulders, and after moving to the city and city water, I do not like the water. I had to start drinking Gatorade or Electrolyte water, which is bottled with electrolytes in it. That keeps my level of magnesium, potassium and salts high enough to stave off dehydration from sweating while working in the yard or walking 3-4 miles a day.

I have been drinking Gatorade but it seems not to help with my dehydration. I have found that coconut water with a little added 100% fruit juice helps with my dehydration better than Gatorade

I play golf 2-3Xs weekly in Florida & work out in the yard several times a week. There is a product on Amazon called TRACE Minerals Power Pack (Electrolyte Stamina), naturally flavored and low in sugar.
