Need Patients' Experience with Mayo Clinic. Is it worth it?
Hello, I was wondering if there is a substantial difference in quality between a top 1 hospital compared to a top 10 or 20 hospital in the nation. So I am a 25 year old, 135 lbs, 5'10'' male who eat well, sleep well, and exercise. 2 Years ago, I had laser eye surgery where I was a very healthy individual have not gotten sick or the cold for 14 years. Part of the recovery regimen was using corticosteroids for 6 weeks and I developed systemic effects. Immediately, I had the swollen face & angioedema. One month later, I had a blood pressure of 160/100 with a heart beat of 100 at rest. Stopped since then (a bit over 2 years) and I still have the symptoms ( chest pain, headaches, light headedness , and concentration problems). I went through various doctors (about 25), including endocrinologists and neurosurgeons at Weill Cornell, Mt. Sinai, and NYU Langone in addition to private practices. I have some lab tests that showed slight to moderate elevated cortisol levels via. the 24 hour urine cortisol test and midnight salivary test. The doctors here seem to not care and are not really helping. i was wondering if it is worth the time and money to go out of network to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota or keep on trying in NYC. Losing hope and starting to get depressed.I have also had 1 slightly elevated reading of ACTH and morning Serum cortisol

My insurance company told me that Mayo would not accept my Medicare Advantage supplement. I call Mayo and they told me that this is false. My insurance is accepted and I have been seeing doctors there since February. I couldn't be more please with the care I have received.
@omioften10
Glad you were able to be seen at Mayo. Insurance companies representative sometimes do not understand that Mayo has multiple locations and policy is different at each location. You did right thing by checking with Mayo, and I usually recommend checking with insurance company, but in your case, the information was incorrect.
I have thyroid problems!
My assigned doctor is to overburden with many people needing help. She does not help me in any way!

I truly believe that Mayo was worth it in every way. My husband has a complex type of cancer that attacks multiple fronts of health. We went to Mayo and they put him on a path to keeping this cancer under control, 14 years and counting.

I understand these days it can be very difficult to get help. We waited 6 months for a pet scan locally, for husband, that is beyond unreasonable, but I hear it a lot.
Have you tried any other medical centers besides your regular doctor?
Our family receives care within many departments at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.
They have an excellent team of doctors and support staff that look at you as a human with needs, not a notch in daily patient count.
We have never seen or received care with such empathy and compassion.
@mombee39 You sound desperate! Are you just working with the doctors in your town? If so, have you considered a comprehensive medical center. It means that they take most all patients and have doctors for all types of situations. The same with university medical centers. Doctors at both usually do research. Can you ‘google’ and see what comes up in your area? Dr. Pittcock is your neurologist—Can you get a referral from Dr. Pittock?
When did the hair loss and weight gain start ?
I went to the Mayo Clinic. I was very impressed with everything. The dr called me in 6 months to follow up. I have also emailed her and she is very prompt to answer. I would highly recommend
