Managing Hip Bursitis Pain
I have what has been diagnosed as bursitis in my right hip for almost a year now-steroids will relieve for a brief period of time . I can’t sleep of a night because that is when the pain is the worst. The only non pharmaceutical relief I have gotten is sound wave therapy has anyone had this and tried something that worked. This is now even bothering me when I walk of a day.

donnajones, Have you tried Voltaren Gel (otc) for your hip bursitis & a heat pack? Also, low dose Mobic is a prescription NSAID that works wonders for a lot of folks. It is not as upsetting to the gut & blood pressure like most NSAIDS are. Also, Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory that may help. Of course, you would have to ask your doctor about all of these.
Praying for you. Hip issues are painful.
Thanks so much for the reply, I can’t take NSAIDS because of my kidneys. I do use a heating pad at night. This pain is not taken care of by the pain medication prescribed by my doctor. I’ll try the voltarin gel haven’t done that.
Hello @donnajones, I'd also like to invite @lkp2024, @edithmiller, @ranch and @hollbell to share their experiences with hip pain and bursitis management.
Have you tried the Lidocaine 4% patches and roll-on. I've had bilateral hip replacements & at 76 overall arthritis. The lidocaine 4% really helps. WalMart, Target, CVS & I'm sure Walgreens has them. The WalMart brand, Equate, works the same as the brand names. If the patch can't be used in an area for some reason, the roll-on is great.
Of course, always ask your doctor before starting or making changes in any course of treatment.
Good luck & best of health.
I had hip pain back pain and shoulder pain. I finally found a pain specialist who used a different instrument and blocked never in those area and I am now pain free. Done in day surgery
@donnajones
My Voltaren gel for arthritis shows it has NSAIDs so may not be an option for you.
The Lidocaine may be a temporary relief option. Tylenol, too. If you have inflammation, ice packs may be better than a heating pad. Heat may make the symptoms worse.
I have tried all of the above and think I may need to see a pain specialist for nerve ablation. The pain in my hips after lumbar surgery is excruciating at times and believe a nerve was injured or compressed causing pain to radiate to hip/hip flexors.
Nerve pain is the worst!
Hi hope,
Has your Dr. suggested Lyrica for nerve pain? I don't know if that is an addictive drug, so some research or questions for your Dr. are a good idea.
And when dealing with inflammation in a joint, in the spine, ice is the only option IMO. Heat brings in blood which causes inflammation. Heat might be ok to use on a muscle, but not on any joints or the back. Again, just my opinion.
Hope you get some relief.
Joe
Hi Donna,
For inflammation, ice is usually mech better than heat. Ice reduces inflammation, albeit temporarily. Heat brings in blood and this usually makes inflammation worse.
I'd check with your Dr about using Voltaren gel, given the impact on your kidneys.
All the best to you - I hope you find some relief.
Joe
Thanks, @heyjoe415
I have never tried Lyrica but can ask my doctors. What type of doctor typically prescribes this medication? When I last saw my neurologist, he never suggested anything for my nerve pain after I told him I can’t take gabapentin due to it causing dizziness.
I’ve is a good option for joint swelling. My teenage sone dislocated his pinky finger and the joint is still swollen. I’ll tell him he should keep icing it (it is a couple of weeks since he first injured his finger).
@heyjoe415 sorry for all of the incorrect autocorrect. 😉
Will try ice and voltaren gel on son’s pinky finger. 🖐️🧊
