Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?
Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

Have you tried regular Gatorade? Also I add salt to my diet by licking salt off of saltines. Lots!! I can’t eat them because of constipation issues I’m on mididrine for heart rate and bp issues and have to increase my water intake as well as salt. Good luck. I hope this helps you.
Yes I have tried Gatorade with extra salt doesn't help with my dehydration. My diet for over 3 years has had extra sodium because of my short gut syndrome. My dietitian said that I am to make sodium a friend.
How about sparkling water? I think that has sodium
I have tried several different kinds of sparkling water. Didn't help much.
For fluids to absorb in my body they need to have sodium and glucose in them.
Gatorade Zero has zero sugars. Can fruits, can veggies or if you can do fresh fruits n veggies, indulge. Juices. Diluted juice. V-8. Smoothies. Blend a cup frozen strawberries, 2 kiwi & 1 c juice. w our bodies 70 - 80% water - always have a drink available n no alcohol.
I am to increase my glucose not decrease. Glucose is something that my body needs.
I am only able to drink 20 ounces of fluids a day before I get nauseated and start vomiting.
My health condition needs sodium and glucose but not much fiber. My body only absorbs 40% of what I eat/drink.
My dietician uses and recommends Ultima powdered electrolyte enhancing powder.
From what I read about Ultima powder is that there's no sugar in it. My body needs sugar for it to absorb in my body.
