Tissue Expander Replacement

Posted by micbrenner @micbrenner, Sep 5 8:25pm

I learned today that my tissue expander is leaking and needs to be replaced. Has this happened to anyone and can you tell me about your experience? Any insight is appreciated. Thank you!

@micbrenner I am so sorry to hear about the leakage, have they offered to replace it or are you moving on to complete the reconstruction? Different experiences with what you’re thinking of doing. Did you have neoadjuvant chemotherapy?

I was fortunate to not need chemotherapy. My DMX was at the end of July so not quite ready to go straight to implant yet.

Hi @margmo24, how are you doing? What did you learn at your appointment? What's next?

Hi, the plan is to refill once a month until my scheduled reconstruction at the end of January. The refill didn't last long, but I'm just putting extra padding for the time being. I will be so happy to get rid of these expanders. They are so uncomfortable!!

I agree with you on how uncomfortable the expanders were. I think that was the worst physical part of the whole process. And I had chemo, a mastectomy, radiation and more chemo.

Do the implants feel different than the expanders? I am keeping my fingers crossed that you say yes!😉

Uncross your fingers, yes. I was amazed that they were so comfortable. (healing still takes time but so much better
