Second Reclast infusion

Posted by dna41 @dna41, Oct 28 1:15pm

Has anyone been prescribed a second Reclast infusion 6 months after the first infusion? I thought it was a yearly infusion but my doctor is saying I should have one at the 6 month point.

Did he give you a reason? Hubby's is once a year.

Have you had your CTX recently determined? If so, maybe that is still very high.

I have had 2 infusions but they were 1 year apart. I would question the reasoning.

Did you have less than the usual dosage of Reclast?

It would seem that the last ReClast infusion is no longer effective thereby warranting another.

I would recommend questioning why before your one year anniversary of your last infusion! I had my first and have had bad flu like symptoms and shoulder pain that just doesn’t seem to go away, even with physical therapy. Saw endocrinologist yesterday; he laughed when I spoke of the aches and pains. He suggested I resume my visits with rheumatology for my Ankolosing spondylitis and shared that he recommended I have Prolia injection, Denosumab in six months; which will be a year out. A little worried about all the potential side effects. I was told if I started an exercise program the exercises would help build bone mass; any truth to this? We all know that there is Always a potential side effect from any form of medication

In theory I'm due for a 2nd Reclast infusion in December but having just had my almost annual DEXA scan, plan to opt out. My hips are no better but my spine which realistically was fine except at L2 (-3.6) ,went from -1.1 for the L1 to L4 total to now 0.3. L2 is the issue probably due to scoliosis. In 2005 my arm measured -3.5 and hadn't been measured again until this year when it came in at -4.0.
I was surprised at the gain between October '23 and November '24 in my spine. Too bad it didn't help at the hips.
Meeting with the endo early next month but I plan to go on a drug holiday.
Were I in your position I'd want to know if the Reclast has done anything since your last scan, possibly scheduling a new scan inside the 2 year recommendation. Good luck on the quest for stronger bones.

I am on a 6 month schedule but for Zometa (another form of Reclast ) so just make sure you understand last dosage etc. Letrozole (breast cancer) put me into osteoporosis after 1 year. At 59 yrs my Endo said it will only get worse (I am -2.8) -I dread second infusion and also wondering how often you all get a DEXA while on Zometa or Reclast? I believe I’m on a 2 yr schedule -when do you know if these meds are helping? Is annual Dexa worth it ? Any advice appreciated-xoxo
