What was your mom's dosage daily? I'm 78 and in the same boat. Thanks so much for posting an option.

I’m not sure of the exact dosage because she passed away in 2015 (she was 97). I just remember that it was a small white or yellow pill. It really helped. She practically refused to drink water. She would start acting strange and have symptoms like she had had a stroke. We would call an ambulance and it would turn out to be a uti. After the trimethoprim this did not happen. You could ask your doctor. Maybe he could start you on a low dose and increase if it doesn’t help at first. I hope it works for you. ❤️

I have the same, can't get rid of UTI which put me in hospital with sepsis in November due to no symptoms leading up to total loss of ability to do anything. I am now on my third antibiotic in a row (I test at home with same strips the doctors use, from online) and am considering trying Methanemine one a day, or fosamin once a week. (sp) They have been successful for others on this blog. Macrobid didn't help me several times over the past year. I am now on cephalex 500 mg 2xday. Appointment Thursday for discussing my above options. Good luck but count on a long period of final diagnosis.

@vlbondon Has your doctor run a culture, to see what antibiotic would be effective with your UTI? This may be needed, if they cannot get a handle on it.

We may experience UTIs, but the causes and remedies can be vastly different. And sometimes medications we take have a side effect of giving us more chance for a UTI.

Ph, I don't doubt the problems with the right drug. My test culture was done in hospital in Oct/Nov and with the CDC's overview, that was when I went on IV enterpenem for 10 days. Checked clear and almost immediately got an infection. I am suspecting this originates in my kidneys so left a sample just now at UTI specialist I started with two weeks ago. If all this doesn't work soon, I will try to get into Mayo's. I am too old to be messing around, at 78 yrs. Thanks.

@vlbondon Several years ago I had a UTI. Told the doctor it was a kidney infection, but he didn't believe me. Ran the culture, and, yep it was. My kidneys had incredible dual side flank pain in addition to the obvious UTI symptoms.

I’ve been taking Methenamine Hippurate for 14 months for UTI’s. So far I have not had a UTI. But, my hair is dry, brittle and breaks off at the roots. I have lost half of my hair. I’m thinking about stopping the Methenamine but I’m fearful of another uti. Has anyone tried stopping the med with success?
I’m taking 1/2 gm a day.
