Muscles ache more in ageing

Posted by Rod @rek, Oct 22 12:02pm

At 76 I keep learning about ageing. My quadriceps started aching a few years ago and I can't seem to get that to stop. I work with a trainer; I use rollers on my leg muscles; I use a theragun vibrator. They all help in the short term but within an hour that stiffness and hurt returns. I'm wondering whether a massage could help. I've never gotten massages in the past. I'm also wondering if this is truly age related or if it is just something unique to me. These aches actually keep me from being able to sit on my heels on the floor. My legs won't bend that far any more. Does anyone else have this kind of problem?

Also, if you are taking a statin, they can cause muscle pain. The pain is dose related so consider discussing a decreased dose with your doctor.

After getting past what I was told in medical school which was, “All chiropractors are quacks,” I’ve consulted one for back and joint pain largely due to osteoarthritis. It helped! What also helps is daily dosing of hyaluronic acid capsules. I take 4 capsules per day (ii am and ii pm). I noticed a near immediate effect in the muscles of my hands and wrists; a bit later, shoulder pain was eased (it was worse in the shoulder I had broken), next were knees and ankles. Chiropractors who stick to what they are trained to do (musculoskeletal pain) are probably ok. If they offer other treatments—beware! And do some research!
The one I saw did hyaluronic acid injections into knee and shoulder joints under fluoroscopy—but the idea of a needle going into my joints creeped me out. If the capsules hadn’t worked, tho’, I may have given it more consideration. NEVER allow a chiropractor or an acupuncturist to go anywhere near your spine.

I believe that the spine is the first place chiropractors want to go!

The problem is that if the needle is an injection, the under trained can inject straight into the spinal cord—NOT a good idea!

Has anyone else here had success with the hyaluronic acid tablets.
I too have so much aching in all joints. I’m 80 and it seems like it
Just came on so suddenly.
I take fluoxetine for depression and had a total knee replacement in March 2024.
Then sciatica started down the leg with the new knee.
Im out of ideas for all this pain. Which increases my depression.
And in turn causes me to lapse from my positive attitude that o work hard to keep.

You don't mention if you have spoken with your PCP about this or have had any tests to see if there is a structural issues that could be creating or exacerbating your discomfort.

My purpose with this topic was to see if this problem is age related or
just me. I'm still unsure but I'm going to try a highly recommended
masseuse and then approach my local doctors which the Mayo Clinic insists
on. I don't have much hope for that approach. Then I'll contact Mayo.

Although I continue to see my PCP and endocrinologist, I recognize that they have limitations based on the medical system they are working in. It is difficult for doctors to practice individualized medicine with the time allotted and the algorithms of these large systems. I wish that I'd seen a functional medicine provider much sooner. I now feel as though I have a more balanced team helping me. I am assuming you are male and wonder if you have had your testosterone levels checked. Low testosterone could be a contributing factor. My belief is that it is a good idea to get medical evaluations in order to rule out conditions that factor in concerning your issues. I am not a medical professional just a regular person trying to navigatey own healthcare.

In an 81 y.o. why I am still able to fairly good health (walked 3 miles in 55 minutes last week) with no meds, supplements, surgeries (yes I can use for eyes) and no doctor visit for past 10+ years, is probably because of taking care of my nutritious food (within 10 dollars a day) and adequate physical activity to help me enough to carrying 20 lbs grocery (often on a few stairs) in a limber enough body to live on my own, and managing stresses with attitude that life is always going to give a few (good and bad) surprises, what I sorely miss is a few friends who one can connect with at deeper levels on matters of life-and-yes Death, and this is what much of my time is spent. To have little social connection is the epidemic that I believe is behind many of our issues like over consumption (in food leading to excess weight or desire for illicit drugs to blunt our psychic pain. Yes even to be physically healthy, I would've liked to share with another person such walks of playful pullups (i can only do one and a half!) and absence of it is also a factor we find it too unappealing sometimes. So I do pacing back and forth or kicking in the air a fantasy football, which does bring heart beat quite up. Heck, even Talking over phone with another person our fitness challenges can help a lot. In the meantime, I say, This too is life, take it or leave it, and so I'll get and do some kicks!
Good luck friends!
(Oh, I thought u might want to know I just ended up on floor as the chair wheeled off; I guess limber body does help)
