Lichen Sclerosus - Now need cystoscopy - Anyone else?

Posted by fdixon63 @fdixon63, Oct 27 3:39pm

I've had lichen sclerosus for many years and apparently it is causing problems with emptying my bladder. I had a urodynamic procedure two weeks ago and the cystoscopy is scheduled for Thursday. I'm concerned about pain during and after the cysto. I've googled comments about the procedure and it's all over the place. Some said no big deal and others say the worse pain ever. I'm 79 and the thought of one more thing hurting is... I plan on sending a portal message to the practice and ask about sedation, etc. Hopefully there will be some good news when they reply. Has anyone else had this situation? Thanks.

@fdixon63 I know something was used as a numbing agent when I had my cystoscopy and it may have been the numbing gel that your doctor’s office has said would be used. I was sure the procedure would hurt but I felt no pain. If it helps you feel better to take a strong painkiller - and even a tranquilizer, I am sure your doctor will prescribe either or both for you. But take something prescribed by your doctor - don’t medicate yourself.

@rashida. Your experience makes me feel better. I hope my cysto goes as well. My experience regarding asking a doctor for something to relax me or take something for pain is a big ole NO! I'll just try and be positive. I need the help so badly that it will be OK to have some pain to get things going again. LOL. Tomorrow is the day. Thanks for your input.

@fdixon63 I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow and praying for you. Just let everyone in the procedure room know you are very nervous and anxious about pain. I have found they are usually very empathic and reassuring. I had a nurse holding my hand and talking to me during the entire time, because I told him I was very nervous.

What time do you go in? Are you going to a hospital outpatient department, or the doctor’s office?

Hello all. I went to the appointment for my cystoscopy today. The doctor took one look and said "I don't see how you're able to pee at all." We'll need to do surgery and "open you up." Now I continue to struggle and WAIT!!. I hate that I've had to wait two weeks since my urodynamic test. If only he was able to step in and take a quick look at that time. I feel the surgery could already be behind me.
Also got a call that a biopsy on my hand is squamous and will require traveling 90 miles to get Moes surgery. We have no choice but to keep moving.
The best to everyone.

@fdixon63 did the doctor say what he was going to do when he “opened you up”?

On the positive side, you will get anaesthesia so you definitely will not feel anything.

Hi rashida. No, the doctor did not say specifically what the surgery entailed. I'm usually a little quicker on my feet and would have left with answers but guess I'm slowing down. Yes, glad to have the surgery under anesthesia but what is the recovery like? I'll find out. I can post the results here if you like?

@fdixon63 since we don’t know what this surgery entails it is difficult to say what the recovery will be like for you. Recovery from the effects of the anaesthesia should not take long, although you will need someone not drive you home.

Yes, please keep us posted … about this surgery as well as the Mohs. This is what I found on your Mohs surgery:

I’ve had three surgeries for lichen sclerosis scar removal and found healing to be no worse than the disease itself. I would assume you’ll find the same or less with the treatment you’ll be receiving for the “opening up” for the cystoscopy. I used a frozen bottle of water on top of my pajama bottoms/panties for relief as needed. (And extra Clobetasol or Silversulfadine creams!) There are also cold pack sanitary pads for new mothers that are very helpful.

Don’t be afraid as you face this procedure. We’ve all had similar issues and fears, and are here to help support you. Big hug.🫂

Thanks to all who replied. You're the BEST!!! I've still not had aresponse from the doctor's office to get the surgery scheduled. I've sent two portal messages and made two phone calls. Unbelievable. I've stopped efforts for the time being as I have a GI appt tomorrow and oral surgery Wednesday. Next Monday I have Mohs surgery. Everything happened at once. As my flow has improved a bit (by using the estace cream daily I guess) it helped me get out of "panic" mode. After the 18th I'll start the contact efforts again. If necessary, I will drive to the office and make my presence known...

@rashida I get so irritated with offices that ignore patient’s urgent needs. You have truly had a stressful autumn, healthwise. The Mohs surgery is amazing and will serve you well. Hope the GI appointment goes smoothly.
I’m a recently retired dental hygienist and will be beside you in heart through your oral surgery. 💕Fear not, just let them help your mouth get healthy. Mouths heal quite quickly, thank goodness! 🤞I’ll pray for your healing and peace of mind as you approach these procedures. You’ve got this!

@2thfairy perhaps you meant your response for @fdixon63 who has been going through all these problems …?
