Anxiety and Depression

Posted by Lost @kill9874, Aug 14, 2017

I suffer from anxiety and depression. I'm on effexor er and seroquel. My mind is racing all the time and I constantly worry about everything. My mom has terminal cancer, so that doesn't help either. A lot of times I pretend to be happy, but I'm really not. I drive my mom to OSU for her cancer treatment when she has them. Since I do this, people feel like I shouldn't be on disability. They just don't understand what I go through. The only time I can sleep is when I take serquill . This makes me sleep, otherwise I cannot sleep at all. Any comments would be appreciated.

@mckenzie, I'm sorry things are not going well for you right now. I do hope your day goes well and you can start feeling better soon. I saw where you wanted to talk about depression, sarcoidosis, anxiety, panic attack, and being lonely without a companion. Well, I think I could talk about any and all those topics. I deal with depression, on a daily basis, it's pretty much a constant for me to work on it even on my better days. Because I know if I'm not working on myself, even if it's just reminding myself to be affirmative to myself. Always working on my self-esteem and self-worth, because if I don't I know that it won't take much to sink lower each time it comes up and I don't deal with it. Sarcoidosis: I was diagnosed with it in 1987, I am thankful to know that I do not have anything active at this time. But through the years, when I feel an episode coming on it is usually when I'm feeling stressed, so it is important for me to continue to try and stay away from things I know will stress me out. It has affected different areas of my body and I am continually needing to deal with them. I try to stay as active as I can and involved with friends and family and volunteering, trying to help others, and that helps me feel useful and that I can contribute to my community. Anxiety & panic attacks: I find myself having to deal with anxiety pretty often, and this goes along with what I said above. For me, my physical health and mental health is connected in every way. When I feel panic and very anxious, I use my mindful exercises. Try to ground myself in my surroundings. By that I mean to stop for a little bit and be very aware of everything, even the sounds around me. I have learned to take deep breaths in through my nose, count to five, hold for five, and release through my mouth slowly, counting to five.
Well, let's see, that brings me to feeling lonely at times without a companion. I do feel lonely at times, I think we all do at different times. All the things I've listed above help me with that too. I also have a dog who is very comforting, take her for walks, and we usually run in to people, some I know and some I don't, but they are always commenting on my dog that she is cute, very good and things like that. I do a lot of writing, I enjoy writing poetry and that helps too. I do hope things start settling down for you and you begin to feel better soon. I am so happy for these groups that we can come together and share our experiences and ask questions and help each other. I wish you well and I hope something I said may help you to at least know that you are not alone! We are all going through something in our lives, and even if it's not the same things the feelings are very similar.

I have never had burning, but I know from years of anxiety that it can cause all sorts of crazy symptoms. I do hope that when your doctor diagnosed you they did a thorough physical and checked for other reasons. Sometimes when they know that you suffer from anxiety, they tend to blame unexplained symptoms on it without checking for other things. Anxiety is tough to deal with and you should be going to a doctor you trust.

I have had lifelong anxiety and was diagnosed with something called Burning Mouth Syndrome back in 2021. It is a general neuralgia and neuropathy of the fifth cranial nerve which causes burning in the throat, tongue, gums and palate. Can also cause generalized pain in the mouth spreading to the base of the tongue and sinuses.
It can be miserable when it flares up and is almost 100% of the time associated with spikes in my stress level and negative life events. That being said, I have had numerous “ghost” issues with different systems throughout my body over the years caused by anxiety. Chest pain and chest wall, pain, back pain, prickly, a rhythm is such as PVCs and PACs, ringing in the ears, etc. Anxiety and stress can do crazy things to the body as the mind and body really are tied together very closely. Just try to, take a breath and separate the emotional side of your life from the physical side. Good luck.

Some people get headaches but I get stomach aches & my husband
finally said he thought it was anxiety.........now I agree. I do take Lorazepam,
once a day and that helps. The mind body connection is REAL. Keeping a journal is most helpful as it lets you vent & when you read the entry in the future you learn something about yourself & the situation which gives
you anxiety. Also any type of exercise, especially in the fresh air. K

I had burning mouth syndrome for a few years. Was on neurontin, however, chewing sugarless gum worked the best!

When I was told I have anxiety, I said, 'Me anxiety? I'm retired!' Offered CBT to help, I said, I know it I can do Myself. Said it's not the same, I said I'll try Myself first. It was having to accept that sometimes even when you appear to have no good reason to explain anxiety attack, realizing that my four full-time years of work -- health without healthcare -- was no one interested in even looking at it. I had -- and still am -- living with the realization that even when one could show with concrete evidence that most of what makes us unhealthy is up to us to do to fix -- without medical intervention.
Living with the grief that my explanation showing self-help can solve our many health problems is no one interested in.
I still don't understand, what effectively Plato had said millennia ago.

I also took Effexor and Seroquel for many years . I just went inpatient due to depression and intrusive racing thoughts and anxiety. They pulled me off and gave me 5 mg Abilify and Trazodone. Day 6 and my mind has slowed down. I hope this is the fix I needed.

Hi, @peach123456 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. If I understand correctly, as an inpatient, the doctor tapered or took you off venlafaxine and quetiapine and put you on aripiprazole and Trazadone instead?

Glad to hear your mind has slowed down. Are you still inpatient at this time? Did you feel any effects of going off the venlafaxine and quetiapine?

How dare these "people" feel you are not entitled to be on disability. If any had the nerve to say that to me I would demand to see their medical license. You are going through a lot. Maybe you need to educate them on this. I am angry on your behalf. Do the best you can for yourself and ignore these ignoramouses.
