Length of needed Hotel Stay for initial Visit at Mayo AZ?

Posted by oldoz @oldoz, Nov 1 9:38pm

Will be traveling to Phoenix for an initial visit with Urologist for both BPH treatment and Prostate Cancer. The urinary/bladder retention is my most urgent issue. Medications are no longer helping and my local Urologist said I need a TURP procedure soon because I am permanently injuring my bladder. He doesn't do any of the other procedures such as Holep. Watchful Waiting on the Gleason 7 Cancer. I sent all of my records to Mayo and they made me an initial appointment 2 days before Thanksgiving.
Am I correct that any procedures or additional tests the doctor wants done will have to be scheduled for a later date. I need to make hotel reservation. Am I correct that those will be scheduled for a separate later trip. Thanks for any response!

My experience, tests that are ordered are not given on the same day. Although blood tests and piss tests can usually be scheduled later the same day. There are several hotels around the Phoenix campus, Raddison, Cambria, Holiday Inn Express. All with shuttle service. There is also a nice shopping area nearby
With some good restaurants. Good Luck 🍀

I've stayed at the Residence Inn on the Mayo campus in Phoenix after I had my surgery for a couple of nights. Tell them you're a surgery patient and you get a better rate.

You should realize that many people that have been told the are a Gleason 7 are much higher when they have a prostatectomy. Happened to me and many other people I know. Watchful waiting could be a major mistake. Good thing you’re going to Mayo, They can straighten out what you really should do.

Doing a TURP is just ignoring reality, but is profitable for the urologist?

There is a cancer support group that allows you to stay for free in many cities. Search “ free, lodging, cancer patients” and you will find a lot of information. American Cancer Society is involved in this as well.

Thanks all for the info, this helps.
I'm writing down questions for the new doctor. Current Urologist seems to tell me minimum info, but if I don't ask the right specific questions I seem to be on a need to know basis.

I’m going to Mayo Rochester for testing November 13 since I’m not recovering well enough (still leaking pretty bad)
You should get a telephone visit a few days before you go there to explain things.
I did book 2 nights but when I have my phone visit I can change things.
I live bout 5 hours from Mayo Rochester so even getting out mid afternoon could work for me.

Thanks - I will make reservation, then ask questions when I get the call. They will probably be running minimal staff Thanksgiving week when I'm scheduled.

There is the Sleep Inn North Scottsdale that is only 4 miles from the Phoenix Mayo campus and they offer free shuttle service. Their rates are unbeatable from what I found and they also have a Mayo patient discount.
There is also the Help in Healing Home that is right next to the Phoenix Mayo campus $50 per night and is used for longer term stays, although I am on the waitlist for just a 10 day stay. They let you know the week before if they have a room available because they don’t know when patients will leave rooms. So I made a reservation at the sleep inn and then if one opens up at the healing home, I will just cancel the hotel. The healing home offers a bedroom with two beds and then you share the living room, library, and kitchen with five other people in each Casita. They are so kind and extremely helpful if you decide to call them. 480-609-1324
