Lichen Sclerosus - Now need cystoscopy - Anyone else?
I've had lichen sclerosus for many years and apparently it is causing problems with emptying my bladder. I had a urodynamic procedure two weeks ago and the cystoscopy is scheduled for Thursday. I'm concerned about pain during and after the cysto. I've googled comments about the procedure and it's all over the place. Some said no big deal and others say the worse pain ever. I'm 79 and the thought of one more thing hurting is... I plan on sending a portal message to the practice and ask about sedation, etc. Hopefully there will be some good news when they reply. Has anyone else had this situation? Thanks.

I’ve had a cystoscopy. It was done in a hospital so I must have been a local anaesthetic because I felt no pain, during the procedure or after.
fdixon63, I had a cystoscopy for Interstitial Cystitis several years ago. It was "uncomfortable" but not what I would call really painful. I felt more pressure than anything else. The procedure doesn't last long at all.
Praying for you to get answers.
I've had a couple and while it's not fun I was not uncomfortable during the procedure nor had any after effects I can share more if you like in a private message.
coidstinks2023. Hi. Were you sedated at all? I'm 79 and don't handle pain like I used to. I have some hydrocodone on hand from dental surgery and may take one to relax me. Thanks.
Hi mnclaes. If I think of any more questions, I'll get in touch. Thanks.
fdixon63, I was not sedated. I honestly can't remember if they used anytime of anesthesia in the bladder or not, it's been so long ago. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
Praying for you.
I hope this helps : best ask your doctor, 🙏 Cystoscopy may be done in a testing room, using a local anesthetic jelly to numb your urethra. Or it may be done as an outpatient procedure, with sedation. Another option is to have cystoscopy in the hospital during general anesthesia.
The type of cystoscopy you'll have depends on the reason for your procedure.
@fdixon63 I understand your wanting to take some medicine before the cystoscopy. As a nurse, I’d caution against doing so. You really don’t want some medication in your system that the doctor hasn’t ordered and/or doesn’t know about. I would suggest calling the doctor’s office and speaking to a nurse. You can ask her if taking the medication is ok. She can also inform the doctor and write it in your chart. What do you think the doctor might say to your request?
@becsbuddy. Thanks for the wisdom. The reason I want to take hydrocodone before the cystoscopy is as stated before. I understand your point though. As lay people it seems to be OK to take the hydrocodone but the medical staff needs to be aware. I did send a portal message asking about sedation, etc. The reply was they will use a numbing jelly and that's it. She said the whole thing goes so quickly that it will be OK. We'll see... Two more days to wait. Thanks for everyone's input.
@fdixon63 I know something was used as a numbing agent when I had my cystoscopy and it may have been the numbing gel that your doctor’s office has said would be used. I was sure the procedure would hurt but I felt no pain. If it helps you feel better to take a strong painkiller - and even a tranquilizer, I am sure your doctor will prescribe either or both for you. But take something prescribed by your doctor - don’t medicate yourself.
