Total knee replacement

I am one year out from total knee replacement and my knee pops when I move it. Anyone else have this?

My surgeon prescribed Lyrica for nerve pain after my 2 TKR’s and that really helped! Only took it for 2 weeks after the first surgery but needed it twice as long with the second. It was a blessing and might help you.
Those sit-to-stands can be very challenging:)

Hi Molly is back. I had my total knee replacement September 23. I have been going to physical therapy twice a week since then was progressing nicely. Good range of motion and flexion. However, Monday I was having some nerve pain on the left side of the new knee and upon doing repetitions of standing from sitting, without help of hands, after about six of these, my leg buckled with increased pain up the outside tband I felt such nausea and pain. More than I’ve had during this whole recovery. I am now back to not being able to stand without help, Walker, etc ugh

Hey Molly. Sept 23 wasn't that long ago. I'm certainly no knee surgeon. It sounds like you may have overdone it with the reps from standing to sitting. I suggest icing it, resting it, and elevating as much as possible. I know these are common suggestions, but they may help you recover a bit faster and get back to exercises.

Finally, until the swelling from the surgery subsides, I'm not sure that standing exercises are best right now. Again a suggestion - maybe work on the flexion and extension exercises for a while.

I think my PT moved me to strengthening exercises too soon when we should have focused more on flexing and extension. The range of motion is the most critical.

Resting and icing is of importance, but you need to keep the ROM up or it will scar quickly and freeze and movement you have gained. This will make for an unworkable joint.

I needed a MUA ( manipulation under anesthesia) at 11 weeks post-op as i couldn’t retain my numbers from PT and my knee was pretty bent. I could make 120s* and get to 0* but with great agony, and it didn’t last once I left the session. Second opinion Dr guided me as first said I was just slower in recovery and he was ok with 90* flexion!

Gotta speak up for yourself. Connect w your surgeon. Let them know about your new pain. Take your pain meds ( I couldn’t believe how long I took them for recovery, and it started all over again after the MUA).

Highly recommend an ice machine that you wear all night, knee elevated. Freeze yogurt containers and put in machine, keeps cold all night. Helps immensely.

Best wishes, you are still new in recovery. I’m at 5 months postop and I keep wondering when it will feel like I made a good decision. The component is too large and my skin has not stretched and it feels weird to bend it with any movement on stairs. Walking is better now. We shall see…

You can develop a condition called synovitis or angry knee syndrome. It is when your synovial
fluid becomes inflamed inside your knee. I developed it by undiscerning pt s who were not paying attention to my knee because they were so hell bent on getting my extension to 0. A more attentive pt put a percussion massager on my leg and I about jumped out of my skin. She immediately stopped the regimen and told me to go get a massage and lay low for a while. My knee was very swollen. If you google synovitis you can learn quite a bit.

He gave me knee and IT band exercises to do on my own and agreed that since I have fibromyalgia to keep away from doing physical therapy. I've been either doing exercises as tolerated or walking each day. The heat has really taken a toll on my due to my fibromyalgia.

I’m interested in your comment. I’ve had fibro 40 years and no one understands that exercise gives me flu-like aching. There’s a name for it now: post-exertion malaise. My left knee wants to buckle - been doing that for several years and I had PT to strengthen. Stopped exercising, but need to really lose weight, so started a couple months ago in a warm water therapy pool. Behind the knee area became inflamed and I couldn’t walk. X-rays show bone on bone knee OA and I have ortho app’t next week. Also have idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, with numbness in the side shin. And, lol, a couple years ago, when knee buckled going up steps carrying something heavy, imaging showed my kneecap is 2 bones held together with connective tissue, not one. That gets inflamed, too. While waiting on the ortho app’t over the last few weeks, I’ve been resting and doing some leg strengthening exercises - not the repetitions usually prescribed by PT - and I can now do household chores, stroll around big box store for 30 min…average 4K step per day. No pain meds or muscle relaxers, so I don’t think I need to start knee injections. I am scheduled to start PT and am worried, because after PT, I’ll probably be in pain and won’t be able to walk. Has that been your issue, too? I seem to be relatively pain free if I don’t exercise..but that’s not helping the weight issue. I’m 75, so surgery may not be something I want to risk. Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend a partucular physical therapist to anyone. I've been treated by many PT for several TKR, sometimes more than one for the same TKR. I can't make a judgement on their abilities but I can say that for aside from the basic exercises many have different programs they follow. We have two PT's in our family and they can't agree.

I finally found out severe spinal stenosis is the source of my knee pain and difficulty walking plus fibromyalgia of course. I found a PT who is an MD and very very gentle. That's what u need too. He understands if I push too hard I only hurt more!!! Keep looking til u find a gentle PT! Also check out your spine because yours might have an issue too affecting your knees. Hang in there!!!

I concur 100%. The studies and recommendations differ from so many places in regards to treatment, assessments and recovery PT.
I highly recommend staying alert and being an advocate to healing the best that you can. Don’t settle.

Thanks…I do have slight spinal scoliosis and degenerative disks in my neck and lower spine. I have no clue re good doctor..I’m in an eastern NC small town, not far from Raleigh
