Things to do during my stay at Mayo PHX-1

Posted by amylward @amylward, Oct 27 1:33am

I'll be having a procedure in the next few weeks. I am fortunate that after the first few days, I've been told to expect that I will feel pretty decent but need to stay admitted for observation. That makes me wonder: what activities are available for patients aside from chaplain, therapy dogs, and the cafeteria? Is there a place where patients can get some fresh air, maybe a patio?

I'd love to hear ideas. I won't be feeling quite well enough to take advantage of the campus hiking trails, though! 🙂

Hi @amylward, you're in good hands at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. I'm tagging a few Mayo Arizona patients like @gratefulbob @danab @konerumanjula @nancykamitchis @tempusv @zzonner @robinb2023, @ldrlaw @maydayaz @roxanne12345 @fanci @scottij @estrada53 who can offer tips on activities to do in and around Mayo Clinic at the Phoenix campus to get fresh air, pleasant locations and more.

Amylward, will you stay on site or be well enough to venture beyond the hospital? Will you have a vehicle?

The music museum is a must even if you’re not particularly musical. You could spend the entire day there and if I recall correctly, there was a cafeteria . Also very interesting Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesen building.

As a reminder, there are two campuses about 20 minutes apart by car. So be sure you know which building/campus you need to go to.

There is a beautiful desert patio across the street from the main entrance with a lot of desert plants and singing birds. It is small but peaceful and has several benches to sit and meditate. For more energetic activities you need a car to get around. There are great museums. The Heard and the Phoenix Art Museum are best IMHO.

Hello,
We rented an airBNB near Mayo. It worked out so well. I had to go back to the hospital every day for lab tests at first. We ate at home most of the time, but there are many good restaurants around where you can pick up food. There are beautiful parks to walk in, and great shopping malls nearby. From my experience, it’s best not to venture out for awhile. You won’t be feeling so well until they get your medicine adjusted. Take hobby items that you enjoy doing. Stay out of crowds, wear a mask, take your bottle of hand sanitizer everywhere. Do a lot of reading and resting.

We were able to walk from one campus to the other. I had tests and interviews on both, they are a mile or less apart. Of course, that depends on what part of the Methodist campus you need to be and how physical you can be. Also, we stayed within short walking distance of the area, 0.1 and 5 minute walk from St Mary's where I had surgery.

I'll need to stay inside the Mayo Phoenix building. We live locally but don't know anyone yet. I try to think of hospital stays as travel of a sort. 🙂 There are often art or sculptures to see, and I'd love to meet every single therapy dog in the building! And I really enjoy the piano player in the lobby. I'm hopeful there might be an area within the Phoenix hospital where patients can get fresh air.

I'm thinking that you're referring to Rochester. MN. I was commenting about the Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ campuses. Have been to both of these wonderful medical facilities.

Yes. Sorry for the confusion! Roxanne12345 did not specify which city. Now I just realized/learned what PHX-1 means. There is more than medical term jargon we are learning here!

bring your phone for listening to podcasts and music. There may be a lounge area to look out. If you have privileges to leave your room with family, look to see if there is a patient library or computer room. Best to you.
