Acute kidney injury- second opinion?

Posted by swestwood @swestwood, Oct 23 2:16pm

I was in an accident two months ago and lost one kidney and the other was injured. I am on dialysis, and my urine flow now seems to be back to normal. Creatinine levels remain elevated. I would like to get a second opinion to see if there’s anything else I should be doing to restore kidney function. I get the feeling from Kaiser that they are just waiting for the three months to tick by post-accident so I can get a permanent dialysis port placed and get a transplant or just be on permanent dialysis. I am obviously not satisfied with this. Any suggestions?

@swestwood Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I hope you are recovering from that accident.

Very sorry to hear you lost one kidney. We are able to live with one kidney, and your remaining one may still be in a healing stage. It sounds like a proactive approach from your team, to have you on dialysis for now. Have you questioned them about their plans for you? Ultimately, you have the say-so in decisions. And if you are not in agreement, they need to take that into consideration. Ask to review your labwork and see how well your system is filtrating out toxins, and the overall status of that kidney. Dialysis is not meant to replace kidney function, but to be an adjunct procedure for it. Any eGFR number at this point is not a true value of how your kidney is doing, since the dialysis is also playing a role.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your Kidney. I don't know where you are located, but definitely YES, get a second opinion from a large medical facility ie Mayo, Stanford, Cleveland Clinic, Duke etc. I think the larger well--known Centers have more experienced practitioners and a larger knowledge base from which to pull. In the meantime, drink plenty of fluids and definitely be aware of any medications that you are taking that may not be "kidney friendly." Also their are special diets that you can follow that will ease the kidney work-load. But please get that 2nd opinion.
