What should I know before starting Evenity?

EVENITY
Like many of you, I have started from shock, to fearfulness to being
apprehensive what medication to take for severe osteo.
My numbers are L -5.2 hips -3.6 and -4.0
I hoped to be able to improve the numbers with diet and exercise.
Eventually I realized that it might be possible with osteopenia
but probably not with severe osteoporosis. Dr Beck
Onero program is not available in Vancouver, yet.
I am trying to learn hip hinge and squats
eventually I will find a a physical therapist/kinesiologist
with osteoporosis experience.
I do the stairs as often as I can, increasing how many times:
until hopefully add ankle weights.
My threadmill speed is 2.2mph..the goal is to increase every few weeks:
method: increase, count 24 seconds - go back to starting baseline – several times:
the goal is 2.5mph which is maintenance: and the larger goal is 3.1mph
which is osteogenic.
Diet: aside from the calcium and and Vit D: am looking into natural
sources of Vit K (Natto is not something I could consume regularly).
and have 5-6 prunes daily.
So…have finally made the decision to go with Evenity, if approved.
Have not used anything in the past: anabolic or anti resorptive.
Thank you for ladies from Canada for mentioning CTX. It is available
in Vancouver (sorry I didn’t mark down names) P1NP and TBS is not available.
Neither is REMS. I got a CTX – which we pay out of pocket here, so is
Vit D out of pocket unless it’s requested by a specialist. And TBS is
not available either. My CTX was in the 500.
Would be glad to hear comments, or shared stories.

@4deborahrb usually we might do Reclast or Fosamax (the latter would be possible after only two years of Prolia). But you are in a special situation with the lumbar fusion planned. Someone posted a study showing that Evenity prevented rebound after Prolia with some reduction in effectiveness, but still effective.
In your situation I would try Evenity and do bone markers and maybe pay out of pocket for a DEXA if needed. I hope you can get on something quickly- either Reclast or Evenity. It is hard when different specialties are involved and they don't know the details of each others' areas of expertise!
Thank you so much. I just talked with my Endo and I’m going to give the Evenity a try. Actually I had the surgery 2 1/2 months ago and surgeon said my bones were spongier than she would have liked. I wore the back brace 24 hrs a day for 6 weeks because of that. I still am wearing it for another 2 weeks just when up and around. Hopefully my 4 month trial of Tymlos did not reverse anything… wish we could have feedback more often than annually with Dexa.
Hi @gravety3, I am 74 and my Dr's won't let me use estrogen. The best I could do was get a prescription of Evista due to my age. Do you see a functional dr?
@gravity3 I'm toying with the idea that alternating anabolics and bisphosphonates might negate the ill effects of long term bisphosphonates. So, bisphosphonates slow down bone remodeling and they help prevent fractures for awhile but eventually less remodeling leads to unhealthy bone. Anabolics boost bone remodeling. I don't understand the details but there are studies showing that Evenity in particular is not just increasing bone density willy nilly but doing so in a way that is beneficial to bone architecture. I would expect that bioidentical hormones might also be a possibility but a less powerful one than Evenity?
This is a lot of speculation on my part. Just trying out possibilities in my mind for the dilemma of how to proceed after a successful round of Evenity and not liking the standard Prolia or Reclast offerings.
BTW, I just finished Evenity and am about to start on Risedronate. Plan is 1 year on Risedronate to hopefully hold on to my Evenity gains and then back to Evenity to build more bone. If all that works according to plan I would be in good shape bone wise but have the same problem we are discussing. How to keep what you've gained for the rest of your life?
Yes. I finally found a functional medicine provider who works with bhrt after consulting with 3 doctors who would not prescribe bhrt. They appeared to be unaware of new research and findings that expose the flaws in the old women's health initiative study. Is there a specific reason that they do not want you to have estrogen? My functional medicine provider said it is never too late to take bhrt but this may be specific to my history.
Have you watched the PBS documentary on menopause? The M Factor: shredding the silence on menopause.
I will be referring my endocrinologist to this documentary.
Thanks @gravity3. I haven't yet watched the M Factor, but I will. I don't know if Estrogen would be good for me. I had a hysterectomy, bit still have a cervix, ovaries and one tube. I have a history of fibroid and endometriosis. I am considering a functional doctor, even though expensive.
What was your experience with Evenity as far as side effects and effectiveness? Thanks.
If you are on Medicare some of the costs may be covered. I don't know if it would be useful to you but I simply hate that my generation of baby boomer women were deprived of better research and information about menopause and HRT treatment. For myself I
Can't help but wonder how hrt may have improved the course of my aging and health: bones, skin, mood, libido...the list goes on. What I can do is point women of any age in the direction of better research and forums that seem to educate women anden about menopause.
My breast cancer was fed by estrogen and my treatment was to eliminate any remaining estrogen in my body (after menopause it comes from the adrenals) . So I have had to go in the opposite direction, so to speak, of HRT.
Have you looked into Forteo?
