@dzoneill, thank you for telling us more about your hip issue. You have overcome so much already and I have no doubt your perseverance will be empowering to some of our other members.

While my initial search has not found anyone who has experienced something exactly as you, but I will keep looking. I would like to invite some members who have had hip replacements and hip issues who will have some shared experiences with you in the meantime. @amber67, @beatricefay, @mnpat @grandmacheryl @popolopo @bobg10, @tallteri, and @sma1952 have all discussed hip replacements

In response to your question, my 53 year old sister was diagnosed with necrosis of the left hip. Basically, the joint had slowly “disappeared” over many years of her alcoholism which is a contributing factor to some necrosis ailments.
She eventually moved in with me and I helped her lose the weight and take control of her addiction in order to qualify her for hip replacement.
The surgery and recovery went well, until she moved back home and started smoking again, which caused her wound area to open up. Over the next year, she gained the weight back and was put back on oxygen.
In 2020, my sister passed away from Covid. She was 56.
Smoking and major surgery are a no-no. Hope this helps someone!

all your hard work and love so sorry she died. i am losing weight i hope on ozempic fear gaining it back. i really hope not. i have severe arthritis on my left hip making it hard to walk without a walker. i live alone and found a great volunteer group who help me with bed making sweeping and other organizational projects. they are so kind i hope every city takes care of the elder population like mine does. this helps me i cannot have the surgery until my a1c drops to below 7

my orthopedic dr said if cortisone shots made me feel like dancing to go dance. my primary dr says she is surprised that the hip hasn't cracked off. i really don't get it. am i getting bad information again. was on statins for 2 years. just beginning to take ozempic hoping for weight loss and a way to stop the weight gain in case it wants to creep up on me again.

Hello...I had girdlestone resection about 18 months ago and told I would never be able to have another hip due to chronic Osteomyelitis in my femur and pelvis now and on lifelong antibiotics. I am walking with a walker and crutches for short distances. I was very active before this happened to me and I continue to do my exercises daily. I like to talk with anyone in my situation to see if there's anything else I could do to help myself or offer help to get the best possible outcome. I'm 70 and live in Michigan.......Cindy

i am kathy and from michigan originally i live in new mexico now. i am 76. i didn't expect this to come on so fast. i use a walker and am just having seen the orthopedic dr. aside from the walker in my house i can drive and get the walker out to go into my drs. appointments. my bone dr he liked to call himself suggested cortisone shots as a conservative way to treat my osteoarthritis. i can't have the surgery because my a1c is at 10. i ave to be under 7. i am interested in the platelette injections which he performs at the taos osteopathic institute. he's the boss though so i am having my primary care dr help by speaking with him. why waste time on steriods if the platelette injections regenerate bone and cartilage? i take dulocitin 20 mg daily and gabapentin capsules at 100 mg daily and aspirin and i sleep a lot.

Hello...I realize your post is very old and you might not even check the website any more, but I see you were in Michigan and perhaps still are. I am also in Michigan and had Girdlestone Resection in Feb 2022. I can get around with 2 crutches now but would love to chat further with you and see how you're doing now if that's possible. I'm 71 years old. Thank you for listening and I hope we can connect....Cindy

I was under the impression that steroids contribute to bone loss. Why would they put you on that type of treatment?

I had left hip replacement surgery about 8 years ago, now my left leg is weak and there is pain in the hip. Is there a time limit on replacing hips?

Courtney....I would recommend you contact your surgeon for a consult if you are having pain and weakness. This could be signs of an infection in your joint. I had infection occur 15 years after my implant and only had about 4 days warning of it, although it had been brewing in there for quite some time. Please get it checked out ASAP......Cindy

I am walking without a hip joint after my hip replacement caused problems. When they operated my joint was in such a mess from the metal on metal hip replacement. The surgeons decided they could not fit another replacement
