Burning lips, numbness and Constant burning in cheeks and nose ,

Posted by burnned2much @burnned2much, Oct 16 2:10am

I have Constant Burning lips, numbness and constant burning in cheeks and nose along with severe dry tongue and mouth,I also have severe neck pain.
This started After getting Covid in November 2023. After I got Covid I immediately got the neck pain And quickly spread to burning lips and face. Never seems to go away if it isn’t burning it is totally numb..
Mouth is so dry. I wake at night and have to drink water. This is persisted for a full year now and progressing . I am not sure what is going on if anybody else has experienced this please share with me.
Ear nose and throat doctor says it is coming from my brain, if I press on the side of my neck. It does stop the burning and my entire face And lips definitely seems more mechanical to me. I did have disc replacement surgery with mobi-c implants 4years ago which caused full body neuropathy, but it was not in my face until I contracted covid one year ago.
I pray for relief every day and some sort of solution, but it seems like I’m just being thrown around from Dr to Dr with no prognosis.
Please help.

I have the same thing.. Neuro says it is coming from my neck but others have said it is coming from my brain, specifically auditory and facial nerves. In your case, perhaps it is related to post-COVID inflammation of nerves. Does application of Ben Gay or BioFreeze on that side of the neck, decrease the sensations in face?

I’ve almost come to the conclusion that nobody really knows, I have seen so many doctors or the past five years. I have come to the end of my rope and I I am giving up hope. Some days I pray that I don’t wake up the next morning, so this will all end and give me piece from the Constant pain

I hear you, believe me @burned2much. I bought a condo two months ago and have to sell it because so many noises in the building and outside are setting off my symptoms. Burning, numb, facial pain left side. I am not chasing this down because I know noone will have answers. I have a good relationship with the nurse practitioner at my PCP and made an appointment with him for next week to discuss strategy. Mass. Eye and Ear wasn't that helpful but I might seek another CT. I cannot do contrast so usefulness is limited. Distraction helps me. I have baclofen, hydrocodone and clonazepam around but don't take the first two and rarely take the clonazepam , when the pain makes it hard to sleep. Meloxcam was a nightmare for me.

Mine is so noise related. It sounds like yours isn't. Are you on any new meds?

@burnned2much that sounds miserable. I understand your frustration with doctors and no answers. Sometimes what it is not is the best information they can provide. They are still learning about Covid effects and potential solutions. If this is nerve pain, I assume you have been prescribed gabapentin (Neurontin) ? Does this help? If there is an acupressure point that you can press to control pain, then you can likely apply an irritant type pain relief there like Biofreeze or Zim's Max freeze or maybe even a patch for longer term relief. I used Salonpas patched for night time pain control for my cancer growing into the bone behind my ear. I would also look into acupuncture for relief. Research Lion's Mane medicinal mushrooms for healing of nerve tissue. The Rebel's Apothecary by Jennifer Sansouci is a good book about mushrooms available on Amazon. You are going to have to search for relief "outside of the box" until you find a doctor to help. Are there any Naturopaths in your area?

Thank you sepdvn, I am actually taking lions mane and other mushrooms when things get bad, I’m also doing what they call stacking along with those mushrooms, you take niacin so as to push the healing properties of the mushrooms to the extreme outer small fiber limits of your extremities .
Thank you so much for even bringing that up. That is very thoughtful and it does help. I would rather take that than the gabapentin which they are suggesting that I take 2700 mg daily. That’s not fun and totally makes you nauseous so I rather do the mushroom stacking.
I will look into the Naturopaths ,Thank you so much for your response and I hope for your healing also.

Thank you for your response. I’m trying not to take too much of the gabapentin because it makes me nauseous, but no new meds, gabapentin seems to be the only go to for anything nerve wise. I hope you find relief.

Thank you, windy shores
I have been using castor oil on the neck lips and anything else that seems to give me trouble. It does seem to give temporary relief

I cannot gabapentin even at the lowest possible dose (doc tried liquid so I could try a tiny amount). I rely on topicals and patches. Capsaicin and lidocaine both help. I got up this morning and the whole left side of my face feels like I had Novocain and my ears are ringing loudly. Not so painful though.
