I filed for SSDI after losing job due to recovery issues, and being unable to function well enough to do any job.
I was refused, which is normal for SSDI. I hired a SSDI lawyer and after almost 2 years, I won my case. You must be able to tell the judge not just your symptoms, but how it has affected your quality of life, the ability to perform your prior job or any other job. And be very honest with them.
I just filled in 17 pages of those questions being asked. Example: can you bathe by yourself and my answer was: I need a medical chair, shower with hose and help at times. Another example was food: I can only make what I can cook in 5 minutes. Like a sandwich. I have a friend cook 1 hot meal a day. I hope things like this help.
I mentioned that I could not stand longer than 5 minutes to fix meal. If it isn't a microwave meal, than it is just a Ensure to get my protein. I mentioned to the judge that my job which I performed for 13 years (from which I was terminated due to my recovery), I drove the facility bus and took resident's to appointments, drives, and outings. I told the judge that I do not drive because I could not think straight enough, to make sure I would us the break when I should, or drive on my side of the road. So there was no way I could perform that or my day to day job of keeping residents with dementia safe while they were with me in the building, let alone in a moving vehicle with me driving it. She said she was not aware that was part of my job. I told her that was because all the areas I had to complete to file, did not request information like that. If I were you, I would take notes throughout the day, noting any problems you have while performing your act of daily living. These will help you when/if you get to the portion of the process to speak to the judge who has the final judgement. Good luck. It is a long process to go through.
Uugghhhh, sounds long. Do you know how long it was after medical was completed?
It seemed like over 6 months. They look at all records submitted, and contacted my many specialists for more information. I am glad I hired a SSDI lawyer who kept on top of the process, and assured me that SSD was looking into if I may qualify, before moving my account to the judge for a final ruling. Hang in there, if you can find a SSDI lawyer, you can rest assure they will help you through the process. They do not get paid unless you have a favorable settlement.
Good advice!!!
I’m at about 14 months and it’s so frustrating
