What kind of a doctor deals with muscle spasms?

Does anyone know what kind of a doctor deals with muscle spasms? I get one in one spot on my back about every three months. They are unbearably painful and they last for 4-6 weeks during which time I have to sit in my chair with my heating pad and do nothing. I am 82 and this is not how I planned to spend my last days! I cry.

Physicians do not deal with muscle spasm per se unless it’s due to a chemical imbalance metabolically. PT would be your best bet for pure muscle spasm or cramps. Be certain what’s causing your spasm so you get the right treatment.

A pain management doctor. There are many possibilities as to the reason for your spasms. I have had them for almost 60 years! Some required joint replacement to stop the spasm, Some Required medication like various muscle, relaxers, or pain, reliever, some require physical therapy, and some just require a good old heating pad for a few days!

My primary care took care of mine for years with Flexeril. I also used, heat & Voltaren Gel.

Just recently, my orthopedic doctor switched me to Robaxin....so far so good. If I can get on top of the muscle spasms in my back, I will not have a migraine.

Bless you and praying for you.

Thanks! I've done all of those. Pain relievers make my stomach sick, and physical therapy brought a spasm on, but the best relief is the heating pad, valium, and Tylenol 8-hour arthritis. I wish it were only for a few days, I've had this muscle spasm for 3 months now.

I have dystonia diagnosed by a neuromuscular neurologist. I was prescribed muscle relaxers and Botox.

Did you find anyone? I have had one for 8 years in one spot, at bottom of my left scapula, occurring about every six months. Also unbearably painful lasting for 4-6 weeks. I have done just about all the other suggestions. Been to everyone but a neurologist. I found a medical masseuse who found the muscle in 2024, and works on it. The muscle damage doesn't seem curable, but I've just returned to PT hoping to undo any support issues that I created by assuming positions to relieve the pain), plus they massage it after treatments since it tightens up.

Doctors do not deal with muscle spasm but physical therapists do unless it’s a chemical imbalance causing the spasm.

Acupuncture helped my muscle spasms. I had scar tissue from breast surgery & still working on getting that broken up and gone. Anyone else deal with Serratus Anterior (rib cage muscles) pain from breast surgery?

Yes muscle spasms can be very painful I get them in my legs and my hands occasionally and all these are very uncomfortable I have to rub very gently then put cream a patches on them I find that certain foods and drinks trigger them mine are Cokes lemon sweet tea and sometimes it's how long or how I sit and how I get up. Having scoliosis degenerative disc and arthritis doesn't help. I have done physical therapy for my back but haven't found anyone to help with muscle spasms. My Ortho Dr gave me a pain shot but my body doesn't deal well with those , they make me sick for days. I'm looking for a Dr that can help.
