Prescribed Aspirin for ET with Jak2 mutation and have GERD

Posted by tamara3 @tamara3, Oct 7 9:32am

I am a 65 year old female newly diagnosed with ET with JAK2 mutation. My hematologist prescribed 81 mg aspirin a day. I have not been able to tolerate Aspirin in the past as I have Gerd and in fact at the moment am dealing with a pretty severe flareup. Has anyone had this problem where they can't tolerate Aspirin? Is there an alternative others have been prescribed. I take Omepresole 40mg a day already and in the past Aspirin has caused terrible flare ups. Would love to hear your experience.

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

My suggestion would be to report this right away to your hematologist.

Aspirin is useful for ETrs because it makes our platelet-heavy blood more slippery. But your doctor should know other ways to accomplish that.

I know that some ET patients who can't tolerate aspirin take clopidogrel/Plavix. I have occasional GERD, but Tums quiets it down. GERD is miserable, so hope you can fund an alternative for the aspirin!

GERD is awful and can be dangerous. This is how I mostly solved the problem. I eat a chewable 81 mg aspirin with food containing some healthy carbohydrates and I stay upright for at least 2 -4 hours. I usually do this at lunchtime so I do not nap or if I do it is much later in the afternoon. Hope this helps. BTW enteric coated aspirin did not help me at all. Chewable tums are always in my purse.

Hi @tamara3, I hope you saw the helpful replies from @lynnevb @nohrt4me @janemc.

Have you been able to discuss alternatives to aspirin with your hematologist?
