Evenity and side effects: What helps joint and muscle pain?

Posted by rjkesal123 @rjkesal123, Feb 13 12:40pm

Hi All,
I received my first Evenity injection two weeks ago. Everything was going well, did not even have injection site pain. But the last couple of days I have had joint and muscle pain especially in my neck and upper back, Lower back and arms. I've read the drug peaks around 7 to 14 days. I am wondering if this is normal, has anyone else experienced this and if these side effects subside? Is there anything you take before or after the injection to relieve this pain? It is very uncomfortable. Thank you!

Hi, I got my first set of shots a month ago and felt the same way. I kept passing out for a few minutes and then waking up and then passing out again. I was so tired for the rest of the day I couldn’t even make dinner that night. In the couple of weeks after that first treatment I would get bad bouts of exhaustion but I’ve been having those on and off anyway so I’m not sure what’s the Evenity and what’s something else going on with me. I get my second set of shots tomorrow. I’m 53 with very severe OP (4.1 spine, 3.5 hips). The other symptom I’m wondering if anyone is experiencing is aching joints. My back and knees hurt even before Evenity but now my hips hurt too and my knees hurt more. My back already hurt a lot so that’s about the same. I hope that’s helpful. I’m grateful to everyone who shares on here because this is kind of a scary experience and it’s so helpful to hear what others have experienced. I’ve always been in good health so this has been a bit of a shock. Wishing everyone well!

Just checking in to see how you've been doing since March with your Evenity shots? That drug may be in my future too.

Hi ripley, I’m sorry to hear that Evenity may be in your future too. I have already had 8 shots. I think my body has gotten used to the shots. I don’t feel tired the way I did that first time. My joints do ache a bit more. For example, although I had a lot of back and knee pain before Evenity, now my right hip aches a lot too and my knees hurt more. My spine hurts less, though, so that’s good! I’m still very afraid to be on such a heavy drug but grateful at the same time considering how extreme my case of osteoporosis is. I have also started medication for sub clinical hyperthyroidism because that may have been what wrecked my bones at such a young age so now I’m on two meds and very unhappy about it but I don’t feel that I have a choice. All in all, I am grateful to have the chance to build back bone with the Evenity and I don’t feel that the side effects have been too bad. I hope this is helpful and I wish you the best of luck with your bones!

Hi Ripley,
I get my 8th shots tomorrow. When I got my 5th shots, I wasn't sure I would get my 6th. I had a lot of back pain and didn't feel well. My sister shared findings about drinking a lot of water for general good health. When I started drinking 90 ounces of water a day, it changed my whole well-being. I feel so much better and actually look forward to my 8th shots. No back pain or joint pain! My old bone pain in my spine is gone too!

90 ounces of water would have me peeing all day long! 😂 I will be receiving my first Evenity shots on Wednesday and I’m a bit nervous after reading some of the side effects people are experiencing. I was nervous about Tymlos but my side effects were pretty minimal and I had really good gains in my spine. I’m going to take ur advice and overdose on water beginning today. Someone mentioned alternating Motrin and Tylenol for a few days but I’ll decide on that. At about my 18th month in Tymlos I began having pain in my ankles and feet which hampered my exercise program a bit and though I called the manufacturer to report it they said that wasn’t a side effect that had ever been mentioned. I had an MRI and there was a bit of narrowing between joints but 2 weeks after completing Tymlos, the pain stopped and hasn’t returned. I’m really hoping for an easy time with Evenity.

I would recommend taking 1 Claritin or Allegra an hour or two before your shots. I had rashes on my arms after a couple of my shots and since taking Claritan I have not experienced that. Sore arms. Yes. Lasts about two days. Goes away. Best of luck! Please report how it goes for you!

@pami Evenity doesn't cause the fever and fluishiness that Reclast does, so not sure why you would need Tylenol or Motrin right after the injections.

Evenity's peak of action seems to be around 11 days for some of us (you can look this up) and that is when some of us, at least me and my friends, feel side effects.

If you are prone to allergic rashes, Claritin might help or Benadryl if you are not driving!

Be careful not to drink too much water! Again hydration was suggested for Reclast but Evenity is subcutatneous not IV. I once drank too much water for a kidney test and had some symptoms. Salty water or Gatorade is safer if you are going to hydrate a lot but I am not sure it is necessary with Evenity. Maybe others had different experiences though.

I find it ironic that when you called the manufacturer of Evenity to report your possible side effect about ankle and feet pain and they told you it "wasn't a side effect that had even been mentioned". Well, you were mentioning the side effect to them! It sound like they weren't taking your reaction seriously.

The ankle pain was from Tymlos not Evenity. I haven’t started Evenity yet. When I called the nurse from Accredo who is the pharmacy that distributed my med, she told me that ankle pain was not a known side effect of this drug. But I had read from a few people on Mayo that they too had ankle pain. My discomfort disappeared 2 weeks after completing my 2-year protocol.

Sorry for the mix up on the medication you were referring to. Good to hear that the discomfort went away.

@pami I had to cancel my appointment tomorrow because my father-in-law, who is 94, is in the last stages of life and so our family is all together with him until he passes. I'll report once I get in for my appointment.
Did you have any other side effects other than the rashes and sore arms?
