I believe I have HPV cancer in my throat. I’m at 54-year-old male, and I have questions of people that have survived it.

My husband is 17 months post radiation and still suffering from radiation damage to his throat. He was just diagnosed with pleural effusion and pneumonia. Has anyone dealt with pleural effusion? His right lung is half liquid at the bottom. His radiation was to the right side of his throat.

He is on antibiotics and may have a needle inserted to see what the effusion consists of…

My husband had the same thing about two years ago. They inserted a tube to drain the fluid. It took a while, but he got better. They said it was due to his challenges with swallowing food—he aspirates some of it. Speech Therapy can help sometimes.

Hi, I am of a similar age and had my treatments last year. I agree with the other comments to work with your ENT to get a biopsy as soon as possible.

Also, feel free to message me directly.

5 weeks out is pretty rough. I remember having the same thoughts. You will get better. I am 18 months out and have good reports from my checkups. I have a friend who is 20plus years out. Hang in there you will get better.

I ganay weened myself off of hi cal Boost about 5 months post radiation.
Today I have no pain and can eat pretty much what I want . My throat is a little constricted. I crave fresh veggies and that is a good thing.

Thank you for your comment. When you say it took awhile, do you mean the actual draining or the time required to recover from that, as in days?

My husband has an awful time trying to eat so that must be the reason for the problem. I’m happy to know that it might not be something ‘worse’. We are still investigating…

Good luck to you all !

The draining took a few days in the hospital. After that, it was just a matter of getting his strength back. He still struggles with eating, though.

Thank you again, that helps clarify what might be next. Hoping all works out for you, and us🥹. Radiation has been hell. Only time will truly help, I guess,

I was HPV+16 in January of 2017 and currently no sign of cancer. I continue my exams every 6 month that's my choice. My treatment was similar to all those people that have responded to you. Recovering was and continues to be a day to day experience. First year was the worst, particularly the first 9 months "BUT IT DOES GET BETTER". The journey can be bumpy but I looked at it this way.. consider the alternative. Lastly, this group of people are the "go to folks" for the "rest of the story" after surgery. The doctors provide their knowledge but the testimonials provided here is the reality of living with it. God Bless!

You will have residual pain and discomfort for months, even years. Be easy on yourself. Your body just fought in a WAR! I still have pains and my tongue still doesn’t work properly after almost two years after treatments. Look to the fact that you made it! Puts everything into perspective. Give it time and enjoy the little healing milestones when they come. 😘
