Chills and Extreme Fatigue After Cancer Treatment

Posted by joy345 @joy345, Oct 5 1:07am

My husband had TORS and radiation for HN SCC cancer last year. After radiation, he always feel chill and so very tired and sleepy. His last PET Scan show no cancer NED. But, he is worried that he has another sickness. Anyone who has this experience? Thanks

Only last year? Maybe after a few more years he can explore normal again but one year out he is still healing. As for worries: last week I was concerned that my cancer returned, but then the issue cleared up. However I am only twenty-three years out so perhaps someday soon I will stop thinking every malady is cancer. I'll let you know.

Thanks so much, Sir. You encouraged us during the Cancer Diagnosis of my husband until treatment last year. I was the only caregiver and it was so hard on my schedule that I did not have time to thank all in the HN group. Driving to all the appointments and treatments was so draining that I also got sick. The TORS surgery and radiation were successful and he is in remission now but he has all these side effects. He will have another PET scan this December. Plus, he crashed his right finger in another accident. Anyway, thank you and the rest of the faithful volunteers in this group. May the good Lord bless us all!

If not already done he may want to have his blood checked for low iron/anemia.

Hey @steve55, I just wanted to make sure you got a welcome. Good tip on checking for low iron or low red blood cells.

Have you also been diagnosed with or caring for someone with head and neck cancer?

Thanks for the welcome Colleen. I was diagnosed with stage 3 throat cancer when I was 48. Treated with chemo and radiation successfully with no reoccurrence and little to no side effects until recently. I am now 68 and the last 3-4 years I’ve developed swallowing issues , aspiration and voice issues. These are many of the problems people write about in the blog. I’ve also been dealing with anemia which is why I made the suggestion I did. I too had fatigue and chills.
I look forward to continuing my relationship with Mayo Clinic Connect and thanks again for reaching out.
