Reverse shoulder replacement surgery

Posted by rethajones @rethajones, Aug 21 8:54am

I fell Nov 19 and broke my shoulder in 3 places and tore my rotator cuff. I tried to let it heal on its own but it wouldn’t. So I had total reversal shoulder replacement surgery March 14. I have been doing PT twice a week. I still cannot raise my arm/shoulder up very high at all. I was wondering how long it takes to get full range motion where it doesn’t feel stiff or hurt when I move my arm/shoulder? Don’t know if age makes a difference but I’m 72.
Thanks
Retha

The emg showed no nerve damage ,which is good I guess, just a weak deltoid, which we knew already. I thought I had scar tissue also but the surgeon said no,because of the way he was able to move my arm. So, I am not doing any more pt, but he said I could do weights as I am able,to try and strengthen that deltoid. Good luck with your massage, hope it helps you!

Has the weights help with strengthening your deltoid? Do you have a problem with external rotation?

I’m not sure if the weights have helped or not. I’m only up to 3 pounds and I can’t really lift it more than waist height. I have noticed my external rotation has slightly improved, but maybe after a year,it’s about time!

I found out the scarring from my surgery is limiting my ROM. I need to keep working on this through my physical therapy.

I’m glad you found an answer and a solution. Like my daughter says,” don’t give up!”
Good luck.

I'm working on my 6th month, it's a slow process, I can get my arm almost all the way up, I figure another month. I'm 75. I've have or had PT starting at once a week then went to twice a week. I now use weights. I'm only using 10 lbs in the left (where the work was done) but plan on going to 15 maybe next week. I stretch EVERY day with all the different methods the PT gave me. I believe it will be 6 to 8 months and I'll have it all back. Yes, I had the full reverse shoulder replacement. OH, I still feel stiff, but I'm thinking that will be the new feeling. I mean I don't expect it to feel just like the other side after all there is a lot of nickel in there and no cuff. What an improvement from before I started this process though. I'd do it again.

I don’t know when I will finally be able to lift my arm to wash my hair! I go to PT 3x a week, using the door pulleys. I’m hoping this scar tissue will give some and I can stop having this blowers horn effect.

If this scar tissue doesn’t give, I’m wondering if it’s possible to go in and remove some of it. No one should have to be unable to wash their hair, wash face, brush the back of your head to style or comb through your hair! Just horrible.

You should bring those questions and/or concerns up to your doctor. I can reach behind my head top of my head I can wash my right shoulder with my left hand, I have going a lot of movement already. Stretching is soooo important for this access.

I’ve been doing PT for almost two months, PT 3x a week.
What is really holding me back is scar tissue that needs to be stretched. I’m going to start getting medical massages (not sure that’s what it’s called) hoping to break up scar tissue.

I’m not sure at all how long it will take to get full ROM. My goal is 4 months. The 14 October will be 2 months. I can only hope and keep up my exercises to reach my goal. Will keep you posted.

I agree. Doctor said I need to work the scar tissue. I got a second opinion and it was the same answer. Some scar more than others. I’ll have to wait and see.
