(MAC/MAI) Mycobacterium Avium Complex Pulmonary Disease: Join us
I am new to Mayo online .. I was hoping to find others with .. MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and/or BRONCHIECTASIS. I found only 1 thread on mycobacterium accidently under the catagory "Lungs". I'm hoping by starting a subject matter directly related to MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) I may find others out there!
I was diagnosed by a sputum culture August 2007 (but the culture result was accidentally misfiled until 2008!) with MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) and BRONCHIECTASIS. I am now on 5 antibiotics. Working with Dr. Timothy Aksamit at Rochester Mayo Clinic .. he is a saint to have put up with me this long! I was terrified of the treatment . started the first antibiotic September 3, 2011 ... am now on all 5 antibiotics for 18 mos to 2 years. Am delighted at the very bearable side effects!
I wrote on the 1 thread I found: If you google NON-TUBERCULOUS MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE (MAC/MAI) you will learn a LOT about the disease. But PLEASE do NOT get scared about all the things you read .. that is what I did and nearly refused to do the treatment until after a 2nd Micomacterium was discovered! Educate yourself for "due diligence" .. but take it all with a grain of salt .. you are NOT necessarily going to have all the terrible side effects of the antibiotics! Good luck to you!

January 2017 Update
One of our great Connect Members .. @Paula_MAC2007 .. had a wonderfully helpful idea that I wanted to share! Her idea .. as you read through the pages to gather information on our shared disease of MAC you can develop a personal "file cabinet" for future reference without the necessity of reading all the pages again!
If you have the "MS Word" program on your computer:
- Document Title Example: Mayo Clinic Connect MAI/MAC Information
- Then develop different categories that make sense to you such as: Heath Aids .. Videos .. Healthy Living .. Positive Thinking .. Baseline Testing and Regular Testing .. Antibiotics ..
Tips for
- As you read the pages .. copy/paste/save things of interest into that MS Word document under your preferred categories for future reference.
Then as you want to refer back to something in the future .. YEAH! You have now created your own personal "file cabinet" on MAC/MAI! Go to it!

Hi fellow MAC patient,
I am taking the BIG three now ( just adding the Rifampin today) and wanted to know if you take all three antibiotics at night or if you take any with breakfast?
I am finding that the probiotics , esp the good ones are quite expensive. Do you order yours on line? Thanks for your input,
Lynne
I have saline to help clear mucus. I also use mullein & NAC twice a day to help clear mucus. I do 4 levabuteral nebulizer treatments a day to help clear mucus and 2 budesonite nebulizer treatments a day to help clear mucus. But I will listen to the video...I will do anything that might help..... thank you.
I have had MAC/MAI for almost two years now and under the care of Mayo Jacksonville as well as an ID Doc where I live. I have had bronchiectasis for a number of years. Last February I stared the big 5 and the side effects were so bad I could only last until April. I lost 20 pounds (and I am thin to start with), had constant vomiting, no energy, slept 12 hours a day, etc etc. I have now been off all antibiotics since then and am only doing air clearance therapy including nebulizer and percussion vest twice a day. Having trouble putting the weight back on, but have my energy and appetite back and trying to get as much exercise as my 86 year old body can get. The cough is relatively constant but I am able to bring up lots of mucous on a regular basis and that is a good thing. I rather live my life this way than feeling as bad as I did while taking antibiotics. There may be a better way but haven't found it yet. Will visit with all Docs again this fall and see if they recommend anything new. Anxiously awaiting the release of the new bronchiectasis medicine which is currently awaiting final approval tab the FDA. This probably won't help anyone but that is my status. PC
I’m having a hard time with the 3 antibiotics. Very tired all the time, sweating and then long periods of extreme chills. Also get mild flu like discomfort but no fever. Short of breath. Also no appetite but make myself eat. I nebulize twice daily and exercise once a day. It’s been about a month. I’m wondering if these issues will eventually go away. Also had Covid vaccine six days ago so don’t know if that plays into it. I’ll probably call ID Dr. Monday but I don’t think she cares. I’m going to see a new one in a week.
These probiotics are available online. Visbiome is one of the best products out there, if you need or want the most potent product.

I am on the 3 - 3 days a week . Rifampin early AM 2 hrs before breakfast, Ethambutol and Azithromycin in evening with meal. Use BJ's pro biotic and Kiefer. Limited stomach & stool issues. Get headaches morning after evening pills. Liver enzymes elevated & QTc is trending up. Critical to monitor blood, EKG, vision, hearing.
What is nac
Is a type of muscinex that I buy online.
Its cheaper than store muscinex and works better.
My Doctor recommended NAC.
Yes I have used saline before...but now I use NAC and Mullien capsules twice a day.... they help me clear the mucus at least 3 even 4 times a day...... and I use body positioning also.
Thank you for your suggestions. I also have a large air purifier.
