Taking Flomax and Omeprazole

Posted by sbtheplumber1 @sbtheplumber1, Sep 24 10:02am

I had taken Flomax at night with no complications for kidney stones. Then was switched to mornings a different time for prostatitis and started having chest pains and palpitations. After 3 ER visits and no help I stopped the Flomax and chest pain went away , then I took one more pill and it came back. I was talking with a friend about it and her husband had the same issue and found out he was also taking Omeprazole . So if anyone has this issue let me know, maybe I’m not allergic to Flomax. I’ll be mentioning it to my PCP next week!

My egfr has dropped steadily over a the last few years and is now 34. I finally went to a nephrologist and he asked how long I had taken Omeprazole (30 plus years). He immediately took me off Omeprazole. If you look at the National Kidney Foundation website, you'll see they say the Omeprazole causes kidney problems. My egfr numbers have stabilized since that time. Unfortunately my GERD came roaring back without the Omeprazole, so I'm now suffering from the acid reflux. Male, age 77.

Same here. When first diagnosed stage 5, I was taken off omeprazole immediately.

@steveutnv Have you tried papaya enzymes I took them for a few years after stopping the nexium until doctors put me on Omeprazole. I was waking up choking with cpap and they said it was from the acid , I still can’t wear the cpap but did stop Omeprazole and pantoprazol to do a heartburn test and had to start back on them before the test because heartburn was severe

No, I hadn't heard about papaya enzymes. I read about it and it says not to use it if you are on blood thinners or have clotting problems. I have thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) so it isn't right for me. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm coping okay without the Omeprazole by taking two fomitodine a day and using extra strength antacid tablets, elevating the head of my bed, adjusting my diet etc.

Omeprazole and famotadine work differently. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and much stronger than famotadine, which is an h2 blocker. My gastroenterologist likened it to a BB gun versus a cannon.

@steveutnv I tried famotidine and my heartburn got worse so they added it to my allergy list
