Hypothyroidism and Prednisolon

Posted by cyninaustria @cyninaustria, Sep 22 1:35am

Hi, I'm new here, with Hashimoto's and newly diagnosed with PMR. I went on and off prednisone 2x before my Dr convinced me to stay on it. The reason I was trying to avoid it was that it zapped all my energy and after 2 weeks at 15mg I was sleeping all day and night.
I found out the prednisone inhibits the transformation of T4 (the form you ingest) to T3 (the form you thyroid needs) so effectively I wasn't getting my thyroid meds.
I now take the prednisone after lunch and have increased my T4 meds and my energy levels are more normal.

Seems this is not common knowledge so I thought I'd share it. And btw, the adaptions were discussed first with my doctors 🙂

Happy to have found this site, will post now with a question......

Welcome Cyn @cyninaustria, I think a lot of us have had similar thoughts and wanting to avoid prednisone. @lblauvel also mentioned having Hashimoto's with PMR in another discussion and may have some thought and experience to share with you. @dadcue may also have some resources to share with you on the topic.

I've had PMR twice and started both times with 20mg prednisone which took care of the pain fairly well but took me awhile to taper off both times. Pmr. X 4 years. On prednisone 9 mg 5 in am and 4 pm. Synthroid X 60 years. No problem between the 2 meds

Good to know, two smaller doses works as well. Will keep that in mind
