Alendronate Inactive Ingredients

Not much help but, some are allergic to mannitol.

I believe I have an allergy to mannitol which caused diarrhea for me. The change in my aledronate manufacturer was the only change in my life at that time. Many pharmas use mannitol as an inactive ingredient. I was able to return to my original formulation.

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I'd read that some are allergic to mannitol. I would guess that any medication contains ingredients that might cause allergic reactions. It's something to consider and to know about if something out of the ordinary occurs.

Thanks for the response! That's good to know (not the diarrhea, I'm sorry to hear that!). It gives me something to be aware of when I take the different pharma refill in a few days. It seems various manufacturers of any med often use some different "inactive" ingredients in their products so as not to infringe on the patented contents of the brand name medication.

I am taking alendronate and the diarrhea is awful. I am trying to learn as much as I can before going back to the doctor. Thanks to everyone for all of your input.

Diarrhea is listed as one of the possible side effects of alendronate. How long have you been taking it and how long does the diarrhea last? The information that comes with my prescription says to check with your doctor with any side effects that are troublesome or that don't go away. Either way, it might be a good idea to get some feedback from your doctor.

I have been taking alendronate for almost a year. The diarrhea usually lasts 3 to 4 days. I will talk with the doctor about this condition. Thanks so much.

In reference to my original post -- I've suffered no side effects after receiving the Exelan Pharma brand alendronate (rather than the Marlex brand I was originally given) that lists mannitol as an inactive ingredient.
