What is the prognosis of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?
Can anyone tell me what I am up against if it turns out that I have intermediate AMD. I am 56 and healthy. Does it progress the same as it does in the elderly? Can it remain stable for decades? Are we close to a cure? Do the vitamins and fresh fruit and leafy green vegetable diet work to slow or stop it? I am so upset and scared over this. Do the eye injections work or do they stop after a few years? ... will I be centrally blind by the time I am 65?
Will there be a cure before it is too late for me and many others?
I am so upset

Most doctors recommend that their AMD patients take some form of AREDS supplements, like Preservision, to “slow the progression” of macular degeneration.
Personally, I don’t believe the hype and I don’t believe they work. But everyone has to decide for themselves. Other than that, I haven’t had any doctor tell me anything to “improve” AMD. Other than AREDS, the most they offer is “there is no cure or treatment, wear sunglasses to protect eyes” and if you progress from dry AMD to wet, they have injections for that.
Also, there is a very informative thread on this site about the side effects and effectiveness of AREDS. I recommend you read all of it to help you make your decision about taking it.

What causes more degeneration of the macular
Electronic devices reading and usage?
Do you have the dry or wet form of macular degeneration @mariserodriguez ?
I don’t know. I taught Visually Impaired but had no students with Macular Degeneration.
I have macular degeneration and glaucoma. I get an injection in my eye 1x month to save my vision. I have wet in one eye and dry in the other. Also, I use prescription eye drops. I took care of my eyes my whole life - it didn't matter - my mother and grandmother were blind in one eye. See a good retina doc ASAP.
Thank you_ I was recently told by my ophthalmologist that I have the beginning of macular degeneration that is normal for aging at 77 years old. I was given an additional vitamins with Lutein and Systane eyedrops. I was wondering if using electronic devices will affect my eyes further? I am also an artist and will need my eyes for production.
@mariserodriguez My mother had macular degeneration and she loved to read. I know this was a huge disappointment to her as the macular degeneration progressed. But that was over 20 years ago and so there have been developments in research that may very well help you to maintain your vision so that you can keep working on the art that you enjoy. This is something I hope that your opthalmologist will talk with you about.

Does this information help to answer some of your questions?
My eye doctor suggested Macuhealth eye supplements about 4 years ago. 90 soft gels for 75 dollars. Dosage one a day. I take them religiously. My doctor takes a photo each year of my eyeball. Two macular spots have disappeared and the others have not progressed. Well worth a try. Macuhealth.com through the mail.
I was taking AREDS2 capsules and they caused acid reflux. I now take Walmart Equate brand, the ingredients are exactly the same as preservision, a lot less expensive. They are small tablets and I have had no issues. I've been taking them for a few months.
I hope this information is helpful. Happy New Year and pray for a cure
