Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Can you walk with a walker?
I understand about balance issues and dangers but walking is a definite help for balance….and proper foot gear.
FL Mary…still trekking
@imallears
I had one of my worst falls using a walker, no thanks.

Wow…never thought anyone could fall using a walker. You need to wear a bubble suit . Seriously, just the thought of falling is scary especially when you have no control once you start to go down. Do what you can and stay safe.

Anyone need any humidity? We have plenty to share.
I have come to love my walking. Recently, I have had to give it up due to arthritis in my right ankle. I miss it so much.
I start physical therapy twice each week beginning on Monday. Honestly, I am hoping this therapy will permit me to get back to my walking. My walking was not just for the physical benefits. I love the mental health benefits probably more than anything else. Missing it terribly.
I hope you are able to resume walking soon! I had to take almost 9 months off to help plantar fasciitis heal before returning back to my daily walks. I’m doing 8000 steps a day now. I had to switch to OrthoFeet shoes, but it’s well worth it!
Thanks.
First therapy session/consultation tomorrow.
We shall see. Using Doclofenac gel now.

Walking is wonderful! Have had many wonderful experiences while walking.
Wishing everyone well.
I had my 2024 covid shot on Tuesday and like the first one 2 years ago, within 4 hours I was in bed with flu like symptoms. But y stray I had to lead a “ senior stroll” I do once I month. I really didn’t feel up to it ( and it’s a one hour drive to the nature preserve) so I had to leave at 8:30 am. 5 people were supposed to show up but only 3 did ( it’s up to me to skip it if there aren’t enough people) but I went anyway. Believe me it was no fun as I was still feeling side effects from the covid shot ( supposedly means your immune system is working). So we walked 2 miles. Drive back home ( another hour), went to bed. Sometimes you have to force yourself. But it is as worth it.

Howdy Mary,
Well, the first thing I'm curious about is what type of roadkill did you have today or did you eat another cute innocent octopus?
I'm probably mistaken, but I thought you once told me that the octopus tasted like steak. Is that right or not? On Thanksgiving, I'm going to a restaurant and they serve octopus. I thought about ordering it and giving it a try, but I just don't think I couldn't bring myself to do it.
Falling is my specialty. I am replacing a lot of cement in my yard and this morning I fell over some of the broken up concrete. One of the concrete men said he was impressed the way I fell. I've fallen thousands of times. 13,300+ from seizures and several thousand more falls of every description.
I have been very fortunate, I have only broken a wrist and that's my own stupidity for walking backwards & falling over my lawnmower.
@becsbuddy
I walked 5,375 steps today. Thats probably just a warm up for some members but impressive for me. The other day I went to Costco and walked a mile. I have started parking at the farthest end of the parking lots and I always take my cart back to the store. Not quite ready for a marathon but making progress.

p.s.
If you're still only eating one cookie a day, I found a pizza parlor that makes cookies on the small pizza pans. But I convinced them to make me a medium sized one. Just waiting to get the XL one.
Take care kids,
Jake
