NAC supplement?

Posted by libbyh @libbyh, Nov 27, 2022

A friend of mine suggested the supplement NAC (N-acetylcysteine) for my long Covid. I have never heard of it. Has anyone tried this?

I’ve had LC since contracting covid in February 2020 and also developed pneumonia 6 months later. I still get short of breath a lot and am now on a biological monthly injectable medication, Tezspire, which is administered in the Drs office. It’s helping. I tried NAC and had the worst asthma attack I ever had. It scared me to the point of almost going to the ER. There is a contraindication and warning with NAC for asthmatics so be careful. I’m glad it helps some of you but there’s also the flip side.

I am trying the Yale study protocol: guanfacine and NAC.
I do think it’s helping. I have had word retrieval, attention issues, and memory issues since my mild covid infection a year ago! I have a history of PTSD that has been well treated and managed for over 2 decades, but since the infection, several PTSD. Symptoms have flared. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (17 years of practice), so I am a more knowledgeable subject of these symptoms.

I have also moved myself to a plant based, no grain, no alcohol, no dairy elimination diet for the past month. That also seems to be helping.

I’ve just started to try reintroducing foods that can be inflammatory one at a time, and I am pretty sure wheat and corn flare symptoms of inflammation.

Hi- I realize this post is older, but if you see this I was wondering if you’re still taking the guanfacine and NAC, and if it’s still effective? Also, do you mind sharing if you experienced any side effects?

I’ve been thinking about it for a while, but I’m very nervous about medications. Plus I have POTS, so I worry about the dizziness and constipation, etc. that people have reported.

Any info you could share would be appreciated. Thank you!
