There are 2 Main types of UTI's.

Infection of the bladder (cystitis). This type of UTI is usually caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a type of bacteria commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Infection of the urethra (urethritis). This type of UTI can occur when GI bacteria spread from the anus to the urethra.

Hello @ksey. I am an RN and female. Years ago when I had frequent UTI's one thing I did was always urinate after intercourse. My husband has also been plagued with UTI's and after I read everything I could find about them I came across D-Mannose. After he started taking it DAILY, either capsules or sprinkling about a teaspoon of D-Mannose on his cereal or drinking a teaspoon of the powder in a non -acidic liquid he has had only about one UTI or less per year!!! It is a simple sugar that prevents bacteria from "sticking" to the bladder wall. He also takes Cranberry capsules (he doesn't like the juice!) You may need it 3 times a day to start with. We order ours from Swanson. Several other Mayo Connect members have found D-Mannose to help them immensely! I truly hope this is helpful.

HI Ksey after joining this conversation room It was recommended to me to try D-Mannose I take it once at night. I have tried this because taking conventional antibotics and cathing twice a day did nothing and my infections got more frequent and needed to be in the hospital being given antibotics IV for days. I knew I had to try something different. So I am taking D-Mannose and so far so good. But it has been to short of time for me to say how well it works. TBC

I am meting with my urogynacologist today to discuss several issues including the use of D-Mannose and the medication called Hiprex. Has anyone used Hiprex and, if so, what was your reaction to it? Thank you.

What treatment did you and your urogynecologist decide upon? How are you tolerating it? Has the infection cleared up?

I’m also a recurrent uti female. I’ve had so many im in a situation of developing a resistance to antibiotics which could predispose me to sepsis. I tried the Hiprex for a short time but it has to be taken with vitamin C which unfortunately I can’t take.So, my urologist is looking into consulting with a disease control specialist since I’m so sensitive to meds there are no other antibiotics I haven’t tried. Hopefully the Hiprex will work for..😌

I am having chronic UTI infections for the last 3 years. Have a port for Crohns Dusease and am on Remicaid infusions every 8 weeks. Can not take oral antiobitics because i have short bowel. Had 13 resections so i take IV antibiotics. Any help please. Jackie Egidio

I’ve been taking Methenamine HIPPURATE for over 2 years after having one UTI after another for several years. I do not take Vitamin C with it. Neither my doctor nor the literature specifies it. I haven had a UTI since taking it twice a day every day. Give it another try.

That’s interesting I’ll talk to the doc about it…one other question..did you lose a lot of hair from it? The short time I tried it I had so much hair loss. Thank you for answering.
