Prednisone and change in hair texture

Hi @jeansg and @ninadavis, my hair was always very thick, curly and frizzy. I had PMR for a year, undiagnosed. My hair thinnned out dramatically with the PMR and GCA, no prednisone, and lost some of its frizziness.
I was off prednisone for a year and it grew back without the previous curliness, but was still wavy. I had a relapse of GCA this year, and went back on Prednisone at a high doasage. My hair is now thick and wavy, but not frizzy anymore.
I read that as we age our hair texture can change.
I find with prednisone, though, I had different side effects from the first dosing to those I've experienced with this second round.

Hi Teri, I just turned 65 so thought age was it, but it is really awful whether or not it is age lol

I think you got it right Teri. I had undiagnosed PMR for a long time too. Before diagnosis, my then PCP gave me prednisolone packs periodically for stiffness but never on a full time basis. My hair used to be so thick but no longer. I guess having had PMR and then long term prednisone made it worse. I am off the prednisone now and will see if hair thickens back up.

Hi Teri,

Curious, how did you know the GCA returned? My new rheumatologist thinks I should have the arterial biopsy after 8 years on prednisone, dose packs for flares, methotrexate and now, Kevsara. Have had bad headaches, (history of migraines), tmj pain and vision issues. Not really interested as it is extremely invasive but certainly scary and might set off another flare as I don’t tolerate pain well.
Good luck to you!
