Pain after right thoracotomy with tracheoplasty

Posted by Bill H @billh, Sep 3, 2016

I had surgery on April 11, 2016 and was treated for tracheobroncomalacia. The surgery improved my breathing significantly and eliminated the chronic cough I experienced along with shortness of breath. I had pain in my right shoulder. I received Celebrex and lidocaine patches which cleared up the pain about 60 days after surgery. I am no approaching my 120 day mark after surgery and am experiencing pain in my right shoulder and arm again. I tried heat and Tylenol with only very temporary relief. The Celebrex is helping. Is this normal? How long will I have this pain.

@melindac

I have tracheomalacia and have been to Mayo in Jacksonville. Trial with stents did not happen. It could not be done due to the 'anatomy' of my trachea. Now I am considering the tracheoplasty to fix my problems. Can anyone who has this please comment and let me know how their surgery went and was it worth going through a surgery like this. Thanks

Hi,
New to this group. I have tracheomalcia. Only relief is my CPAP & Albuteol spray. Just started a new med, starts w a "T". Sorry, it escaped me for the moment. Anyone had surgery & what were the results? TIA, History Fan

I just looked up this very uncommon condition, here is what I learned:

How did you acquire the tracheomalacia? I think your best way to get these questions answered is by a ENT surgeon.

I've explored this situation. Went to Temple in Phila, PA. Dr.Stiner is head of pulmonary medicine & surgery. If you look at his website, it graphically explains the procedure. I was denied surgery due to my "age" don't ask me!
I think it's a pulmonary surgeon who does this procedure. HF

I'm having a difficult time comprehending that you were denied surgery based on your age! So because you are older do the risks outweigh the benefits? Or because you are older access to a better quality of care is not available to you?

It stinks, doesn't it! I am in good health otherwise,I take a BP med & exercise daily, however, I was disappointed. The surgery sounds terrible; the incision can rip open & one can hemorrhage. If you do to the Temple website under Dr. Stiner's area, you can see a good diagram of the surgery.
Meanwhile, I go on my CPAP, inhale Albuterol &2 other RX's & cut down on many activities.I was used to being active.

To be denied surgery based on age is irreprehensible! I would certainly seek a second opinion. If you're in the Temple area then you must be close to John Hopkins, The Research Triangle- Duke, UNC Cleveland etc. Especially if you are in relatively good physical condition. Again, risk versus benefits and most importantly quality of life! I am of the approaching Baby Boomer era and do not intend to accept age as an excuse not to attempt to render care. I spent a good 20 years advocating for my patients as a Director of Nurses and will continue to advocate for the aging clients!
