Prednisone and change in hair texture

Posted by jeansg @jeansg, Sep 7 7:25am

I’ve been on various doe3s of Prednisone over the past one and a half years. Just recently my hair has started becoming frizzy and I’m wondering if it could be caused by prednisone. Anyone else have this experience?

I too have noticed a change in my hair texture since being on 5 mg of prednisone since last January . It’s now like very fine fluffy baby hair, tangles easily. Also have lost some volume. I had thick waist length hair before I got sick, and have cut it short to remedy the long stringy mess.

Wow, that is exactly what is happening to me as well, I have always had curly hair but now it is so frizzy that I wear a baseball cap every day, and it tangles like crazy. I have been on Prednisone for 13 months and it's been the last three months that my hair is just awful.

Thanks so much Nina. I hate the reality but at least good to have a cause. maybe the hair will improve if we ever get off the prednisone.

Hi @jeansg and @ninadavis, my hair was always very thick, curly and frizzy. I had PMR for a year, undiagnosed. My hair thinnned out dramatically with the PMR and GCA, no prednisone, and lost some of its frizziness.
I was off prednisone for a year and it grew back without the previous curliness, but was still wavy. I had a relapse of GCA this year, and went back on Prednisone at a high doasage. My hair is now thick and wavy, but not frizzy anymore.
I read that as we age our hair texture can change.
I find with prednisone, though, I had different side effects from the first dosing to those I've experienced with this second round.

I had really thick hair. I have lost a lot of hair and the texture has changed. It's now thin and frizzy. I just stop taking predisone but I am taking Actemra injections once a week. Has anyone had there hair go back to normal? If so how long did it take?

Did you ever try some gel to reign in the frizz? I use it to stop my hair from getting too bushy.

Oh yes, I never not use something, going to the hairdresser at the end of the month, maybe she has a suggestion.

I think you got it right Teri. I had undiagnosed PMR for a long time too. Before diagnosis, my then PCP gave me prednisolone packs periodically for stiffness but never on a full time basis. My hair used to be so thick but no longer. I guess having had PMR and then long term prednisone made it worse. I am off the prednisone now and will see if hair thickens back up.

A good cut can really help.
They say curly hair is "forgiving" - so I get mine cut professionally once in a while and cut my own in between.
