Interrupting Forteo for two weeks

Posted by delongak @delongak, Jul 31, 2019

I'm 66, female, and have been on daily Forteo injections since March. I have a two-week trip in October during which I will not have dependable access to refrigeration, so I expect to stop the injections for two weeks and resume when I get home. Has anyone here done something like this? What was your experience? Any advice? Your comments can help me be more informed when I discuss my plan with my endocrinologist. Thanks!

@jmanj , Good morning. Thanks for connecting with us. A quick thought. I get a medication shipped. It comes in a very thick walled styrofoam square box. There is room for ice. Mine is scheduled for delivery today.

There is also a recent post from a lady who had a solution. Let me see if I can find that post.

I have lots of Forteo information, I will check that out. Have you looked on the website? My last suggestion would be to ralk to your pharmacist. Have a joyful day. Chris

Good morning. I was incredibly tired the first 6 weeks or so of taking teraparatide. Plus I was getting heart palpitations. I stuck with it and my body got used to it. I’m now symptom free and my blood bone markers taken at 3.5 month mark look promising for a good outcome:). Hope your symptoms go away soon!!!

Has anyone had hair loss or thinning while on Forteo? and to what degree? were you able to regrow the lost hair?
Did you stop taking Forteo due to hair loss? I find it amazing that these drug companies don't list hair loss as a side effect whether its common or not!

I was on Forteo for 3 months before having to stop due to an adverse reaction (thyroid area pain/swelling, which stopped right after I stopped the med). I did go out of town during that time and researched ways to keep the pens cold during air travel and for camping. I bought a DISONCARE wide-mouth thermos on amazon that is designed for insulin pens (there is a "Disoncare Store" where you can see the options). It worked great. It has a custom shape "blue ice" (long, skinny, concave-curved) that allows the pens to nest into the thermos. And, it came with a long skinny thermometer so you can check the temp (I didn't open it enroute but it was fine upon arrival). You could probably use that blue ice with a regular thermos if the mouth were wide enough, but this thermos was the right size and comes stamped medical device which i figured would be better for getting through TSA. There is even a version with a USB recharger that you could plug in on the plane for longer flights (I did not get that). I also kept the thermos itself in the fridge BEFORE travel, for good measure. I think i managed to get 3 pens inside mine. You can also ask the flight attendant to put it in their fridge on the plane (they might; I did not try). And, note that I was able to get preauthorization from my insurer for an early pen delivery so that I didn't have to get one delivered while out of town (which would not have been possible given the remote location and constant temperature requirements during shipment).
