Leg pain vs shoulder pain

Posted by smoore6480 @smoore6480, Sep 2 8:15am

My initial severe pain came in the thigh and groin area with some slight discomfort in the shoulders. As the weeks progressed i could hardly walk. Sitting for long periods in a car was very discomforting in the buttocks area. This went on for a few months. Once I started on prednisone most Of that discomfort was relieved, however it intensified in my shoulders. I am currently taking 15 mg morning and 5 mg at night of prednisone and have been doing this for over a month. The legs seem fine but the shoulders won’t allow me to play golf. I’m curious to know if this is a progression that is part of the recovery process? I’m anxious to get to a lower dose but also would like to get back to playing golf since the legs are doing so well. Any thoughts ?

You should be on enough steroids with a split dose most of your pain is gone. 15-20mg is generally enough to stop the inflammation. Not everyone responds to this dosage. I was pain free on 15mg. The prednisone was giving me a rush where I could do anything. Your comment about the recovery process. I was undiagnosed for 3 months and after about 4 months on steroids I could start reducing the prednisone. The prednisone reduction can cause some pain and if the PMR has not burned out that can cause some pain. I am not familiar with pain during recovery. I would say you dont fit PMR symptoms completely. I would follow up with your Dr. See what others have to say.

Mine started mainly in left shoulder but quickly progressed to both shoulders and across pelvis. Once on Pred most pain had gone but it did still linger in left shoulder. I started light weight training a month after starting Pred, of course trying to maintain the muscle while on Pred is a constant battle. I got back in a pool a few weeks ago unsure if I would be able to still do front crawl but I was shocked how easy it was and my shoulder thanked me for it. I know I have to push past the pain to make the shoulder work properly and it is working. I can bench press 30 kilo easily and 6 kilo concentrated curls but on lat raises only 2 kilo and I need help now and then with the left side but it is getting there. I have noticed that on days I do some intensive cardio I feel amazing like I used too before all this started. I am aware of how good for the ammune system that naturally induced feeling is, so happy to push myself to the max a few times a week. Try to get to a pool if only for exercises in water it really makes a difference.

@smoore6480
It really depends on how your shoulders are feeling and how much you love golf!! Just be prepared for some pain afterwards!
Unless my pain prevents me from walking I push myself into activities as much as I can tolerate, even if I have pain after!

So glad you're getting back to working out! I feel that exercise has saved my sanity, hell, my life, actually, mentally, physically and emotionally.
What a drag PMR has been! Haven't worked out since Jan '24, was doing step aerobics and strengthening with weights on alternate days. Used to run, very high intensity and high impact aerobics in classes and videos as well. Miss those days when my face was purple afterwards!
Anyway, in the last couple months have begun walking for 1/2 hr every other day and a little strengthening, mainly bridges for my osteo spine, but working in other stuff slowly. Problem is my upper arms and rot cuffs are still so very sore and of course, they get better, then flare if I dare do anything they don't like. Frustration is putting it mildly.
Having said all that, I do not take Pred. Only Tylenol. Can't tolerate pred. Docs are not convinced I have pmr but I certainly am unless there is some other disorder that would cause this bi-lateral pain. Lower body is much better, but still flares. Started in my thighs and I thought it was a response to stepping up my thing workout. But when it crept into my upper arms and shoulders, I started researching.
At any rate, all this to ask what intensive cardio are you doing?
LOL!
Best to you tuckerp, think we've "chatted" in the past.

As much as I hate Pred I have to admit it works, such a shame you can not take it. Today I swam in the pool, lane to myself which was brilliant, then quickly put a pair of shorts over swimsuit, slipped trainers on and got up the stairs as fast as I could to the gym. Did a decent row and managed to get heart rate up to 154. Have been struggling getting a decent heart rate as Pred makes this difficult for me. My resting heart rate was 43 the other day any lower and I will have to tell the Dr I guess. Yesterday I did interval training on the evil SkiErg, 200 metre then on to the air bike for 2 minutes, back on SkiErg etc, I have managed 10 lots so far. Tomorrow is weight training and Friday a baby Triathlon. I used to get exhausted by 1pm but now that happens around 3pm. I do very short runs early mornings but more a shuffle now, triple bionic and last joint says hello now and then but it will have to wait until next year if I can get off Pred without any problems. I understand your frustration at not being able to still do the things you love so you have to find what you can do and not dwell on things you can’t. If your lower body is not complaining to much get on a spin bike or an air bike. Pretty sure the devil uses one of those when munching on his tic tacs ( Pred). Hope it all improves for you.

Wow, verrrrry impressive.
What is a "triple bionic" may I ask. If you didn't state this above, it seems like you're one of those who feels energized by Pred. It's so interesting that others (myself) are decimated by it...total anxiety.
Anyway, thanks for the words and wisdom and keep on keepin' on!!! Awesome!
