To stay or to go home in between

Posted by jferg01 @jferg01, Aug 30 6:16pm

So I will be having 3 surgeries in October (3, 8, and 18th). The 1st surgery will to have an extremely large kidney stone removed and the other 2 are to have a sacral nerve stimulator placed. I live about 600 miles away from the clinic. My mom will be traveling with me. I am extremely financially striped right now because I have only been able to work part time. My mom said we should come home between each surgery, because staying up there the whole time will be too costly, even with the “mayo rate” i have found at any local hotels, but I am not sure how feasible it will be for me to travel that much while having these surgeries. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice you can offer me? Thank you in advance! Have a great day!

I think staying for the Oct. 3rd and 8th surgery makes sense. You may not be feeling well. Will your mom stay with you. I liked Hyatt House which is in walking distance of Mayo. I didnt rent a car aftermy last surgery as it wasn't too bad. Took a taxi over to hotel after surgery. About $8.00. You could always try an air bnb but then you might need a car. There's a shuttle from MSP airport for $40.

One reasonable clean well managed alternative at a great price was the Nazarine Wellness house, a converted hotel very nicely redone. That was four years ago, I hope they are still going strong.

As others' suggested, I would stay between 1st two surgery's. Give yourself time to recover and if any complications after surgery, your in Rochester.

Not sure if driving or flying, if driving and on any type pain meds, you would not be able to drive. And factor in the cost of traveling home and back, it might make more sense to stay.

Between 2 and 3rd one, might be reasonable to go home if cannot find reasonable price accommodations.

I ditto that, Mayo Concierge Services is definitely a good contact to make. It is a puzzle to put together all the pieces you need for your visit and my experience is they help identify then narrow down options. I was surprised to find out rates drop for a variety of reasons after staying a certain amount of time, for example. And, there are more affordable options they can direct you to outside of the traditional hotels. Maybe you won’t need to focus on staying super close to the Clinic and something a bit farther away would cost less. It is worth asking.

j@jferg0. Contacting the Mayo Concierge Service, at no cost to you, is a good place to start.

When I needed to stay in Rochester, MN for radiation therapy (5 weeks) I stayed with Serenity House Network. They offer lodging for patients who are receiving services at Mayo Clinic. The patient's family and caregivers are included in lodging. I stayed in a lovely duplex with two bedrooms and the cost was far less than I would have paid for an AirBnB or a hotel. I had a car and the duplex where I stayed was less than 2 miles from Mayo Clinic.
I would definitely stay with Serenity House again if I needed to be at Mayo Clinic for longer than a few days.

If you stay they have excellent shuttle buses regularly scheduled.
I stayed a month and also used the $40 shuttle.
I couldn’t have travelled between cuz I live in Orygun.

CHeck out the Nazarene House and Mayo has a list of other affordable places. Mayo referred me 14 years ago.

We are also 600 miles away and usually drive. The first two surgeries are close enough that I would stay as that is also your recovery period. Perhaps home after the second and back if there are two drivers. My husband had multiple procedures this past May and that is how we managed. Sometimes you don't find out until postop about other things like catheter removals, etc so be flexible to changing plans. We have always used a hotel or airbnb but others have given you good suggestions to save money on your stay.
