Anyone taking long-term low-grade antibiotics for recurrent UTIs?
Has anyone been taking a low grade antibiotics for 9 months for recurring UTI’s and developed joint and muscle problems while taking them? I’ve been developing some real issues with leg muscles, back and joints, so much so it’s becoming painful to walk. Any feedback would be appreciated as my next step is to call the doctor and I want to make sure I’m correct about the antibiotic effects. Thanks

I have recurrent UTI, and this particular time my urologist has me on augmentin for 1 week and nitrofurantoi-n 50mg for 3 months daily. I once saw a comment here that said never to use this antibiotic for long term. Has anyone ever used this and if so were you ok any horrible long term side effects?

1 ReactionI have really suffered with joint and muscle pain especially in the legs while taking antibiotic for 3 months. I stopped taking it and now I’m a chronic case again…very frustrating.

1 ReactionI had 3 UTI's in a year when first got my transplant, first 2 were treated in hospital then 13 days of intravenous antibiotics and last with 3 months of Cipro. Never had any muscle or joint issues tho.
Ask your PCP or nephrologist if it may be another med you're taking
Sorry to be not much help

1 ReactionI was given the methenamine to be taken with vitamin c, but it was too harsh on my stomach. Did you have to take vitamin c with it? I think this is the last resort for me since I’ve been on antibiotics forever for recurring UTIs.

Hi I have been taking low dose antibiotics for almost 5 months due to ongoing UTI issues causing discomfort & stress to me for quite a lengthy amount of time, years in fact!
Two close friends recommended I talked to my GP about taking the long term course of antibiotics as they to were suffering from continuous UTI issues and both have been free of any UTI symptoms for at least 3 years now - I am almost at the end of my journey with only 20 more tablets to take taking me into 2026 I hope that the same results favour me as it has my friends.
Believe it or not I have symptoms of lower back pain at present with pain on my right side below my shoulder blade plus I am having difficulty walking an exercise I thoroughly enjoy without complaint until just recently it is causing me a lot of pain and anxiety.
Could this have anything to do with the antibiotics I have been taking over so many months and could this also be affecting my kidneys?
