Natural high levels of B12 and B6

I have PN - and continue to determine the cause. Current blood work show elevated levels of B12 and B6 (I take no supplements or vitamins or drink energy drinks, etc). My neurologist is not concerned and suggested that I start taking B12 1000mcg daily - I know that your body disposes B12, but she could not answer or seemed concerned that both were elevated. I have read the value of B12 for nerve damage, but am hesitant to start this vitamin. Comments please.

@chme

Thanks so much. I’m stopping all supplements with B6. Mine was 66 at a lab that max was 50.
Did you avoid foods containing B6 or just supplements?
Thanks.

My neurologist said to stop all vitamins containing B6 which I did. I also downloaded a protocol off of Understanding B6 Toxicity which gives amounts of water, coconut water, etc. to consume to get the B6 out. It is also important to try to work out to sweat much of it out also. Apparently it can get into the muscles which makes it hard to get out.

There is a very good website that I use called Understanding B6 Toxicity. They have a protocol for how much water, coconut water, etc. to drink along with which foods to eat and which ones to avoid. You have to pay about $20 to get a paper copy of their protocol but the people on that cite know more about B6 toxicity than everyone else on the internet combined.

Thanks, I’m familiar with the group and have been doing the protocol except for extra salt intake. Caused my BP to rise too much. It’s been a struggle to keep B6 normal. I need to find the root cause but Doctors are clueless.

I agree about the salt. I didn't do that part either because of borderline hypertension. Be sure to be careful what bread, cereals, etc. that you eat because many of those are fortified with B6. Also, be sure to check out any types of protein or collagen powders if you use things like that because they can have B6 also. I don't have access to a sauna but I have heard that those can help to sweat the B6 out of the muscle tissues. It can be a long, tough journey and, as you said, doctors are clueless. I give my neurologist credit for testing my B6 the first time I met her but then she didn't think that my high B6 was really the problem and had me go through so much blood testing that I practically became anemic.

I’ve read about B6 toxicity on the site and most encouraged to begin working in this area. Thank you.

My B6 keeps going High just from food. And monitor my daily intake making sure not to go over the DRA. My doctor won’t test me for the MTHFR mutation. Besides not taking B6 supplement How do you and your son keep your B6 within normal limits? Is there something you take to help? With an extremely strict diet mine my go back to normal range for about a month then right back to being to high again. My doctor is of no help, says everything is fine. My neuropathy says otherwise!

Follow the suggestions to look up articles on B6 toxicity. And find a new doctor. You need a doctor who will help you find optimal health. Obviously, the one you have now just wants the money. GET RID OF HIM FAST

remember that the blood test is just what is in your bloodstream at the time. Maybe you eat something like cereal B6 fortified. Your doctor should retest (mine does) or order other tests. Not really something to be worried about if you aren't using supplements or taking meds which increase it.

look up science and not articles which are misleading. I don't think there is cause for ordering someone to get rid of their care provider without substantiation. There are definitely reasons to not do that in this case. Please be more discrete when "advising" someone without all the facts.

bring your doctor the science reports and discuss. elements in your blood labs can be concerning or NOT. Take a fasting test to confirm.

what IS your elevated lab result by the way?!

@tonyde

It's Cyanocobalamin 1,000MCG/ML VL, inject 1 ml intramuscularly twice monthly
Please let me know how it works, it's done wonders for me.
